Part One: Stamens and Pistils

Place the stamens of several flowers together and observe what they have in common.

Use a magnifying glass to look at the various parts of the stamen.

Shake the pollen on the anthers onto the white paper and observe.

There is mucus on the stigma. What important role does it play in the process of producing seeds from flowers?

Touch the stigma to the pollen on the paper and see if it picks up the pollen easily.

Gently touch the stamen anthers with a cotton swab

Use a cotton swab that has touched the anthers of the stamen to lightly apply it on the stigma of the pistil.

Use a magnifying glass to see if the stigma of the pistil is stained with pollen

When bees or other insects fly and crawl among flowers, they will spread the pollen from the stamens to the stigma of the pistil, which will fertilize the ovules in the ovary of the pistil. After the ovules are fertilized, the fruits and seeds begin to grow, and the flowers begin to wither.

Plant pollination often relies on wind and insects.

Flowers that rely on wind for pollination are called wind-pollinated flowers. Wind-pollinated flowers are generally small, not showy, and have no fragrance or nectar, such as corn flowers.

Flowers that rely on insects for pollination are called insect-pollinated flowers. Insect-pollinated flowers are generally larger, usually brighter, and have fragrance and nectar, such as those of peaches, apricots, pears, and apples, which are all insect-pollinated flowers.

Carefully peel open a nearly ripe rapeseed fruit, observe the rapeseed seeds inside, and count how many seeds there are in a rapeseed pod.
