Moonlight night

About the Author

Shen Yinmo (1883-1971), formerly known as Jun Mo, was born in Wuxing, Zhejiang Province. He was a poet, calligrapher and one of the pioneers of modern Chinese poetry.

He studied in Japan in his early years, and after returning to China, he taught at Peking University and Beijing Women's Normal University. He co-organized "New Youth" with Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao, Lu Xun, Hu Shi and others, and was an effective fighter in the New Culture Movement.

His main works include "Miscellaneous Poems in Qiu Ming Room", "Long and Short Sentences in Qiu Ming", etc. "Moonlight Night" and "Three Strings" have always been praised by people as good poems.

Creative background

This poem was written in 1917 and was the first time that New Youth published a vernacular poem. The year 1917 was the darkest and most chaotic era in modern Chinese history, but it was also the era of the most explosive ideas and culture. In this environment, new poetry was born. The "newness" of new poetry lies first in the newness of its spirit and soul, that is, the modernity of thought, the pursuit of "science" and "democracy", the awakening of individual human beings, ideological emancipation, and individual independence have become the common pursuits of this era. With the consciousness of subjectivity, "Moonlight Night" is just a wave aroused in the trend of this era. This little poem is a symbol of the birth of new poetry, and also a symbol of the birth of truly new literature.

Read poetry aloud to understand the symbolic meaning and theme

1. Find the scenes and people in the poem, and summarize the scenes shown in the poem.

Winter moonlight night picture: frost wind, moonlight, tall trees and "me".

2. Use your own words to describe this picture of a moonlit night.

The frosty wind was blowing, and the moonlight was shining brightly. On a winter night with frost, wind and cold moon, the tall tree towering over the sky and the independent "I" stand side by side.

3. This poem is very obscure. Please explain your understanding of the symbolic imagery and theme of this poem based on the writing background.

Symbolic image: On a winter night, the north wind howls and the frost is thick; the bright moon shines high and the air-conditioning hits. The environment is desolate and the characters are lonely, which exactly reflects a certain social aspect of semi-feudal and semi-colonial China before the May 4th Movement. "Tree" symbolizes ancient concepts, traditional, stable, deep-rooted, stubborn and pedantic. "Standing side by side" means the juxtaposition of thoughts. "Not relying on" means breaking away, being stubborn, and pursuing independence. It symbolizes the poet's independent strong character and fighting spirit.

Theme: Not compromising in the severe cold, not flinching in the loneliness. This poem expresses the spirit and personality of a generation of intellectuals who awakened during the "May Fourth Movement" to pursue independence and freedom, advocate bright consciousness, and explore the truth.

Dai Wangshu

About the Author

Dai Wangshu (1905-1950), whose original name was Dai Meng'ou, nicknamed Haishan, used to use the pen names Meng Ou, Meng Ou Sheng, Xinfang, Jiang Si, etc., was a native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Chinese modern symbolist poet and translator. His representative works include "Rain Lane" and "My Memory", and his main works include poetry collections "Wangshu Grass", "Wangshu Poetry Draft", "Disaster Years", etc.

Xiao Hong (1911-1942), a modern Chinese female writer, "one of the four most talented women in the Republic of China", was known as the "Literary Goddess of the 1930s". His representative works include the novel "The Story of Hulan River".

Creative background

"Kou Zhan by Xiao Hong's Tomb" is a mourning poem written by Dai Wangshu in 1944, expressing his memory for his deceased friend. Poet and critic Zang Di called it "a great poem" in "How Short a Great Poetry Can Be." When he wrote this poem, China was in the middle of a war. In the war-torn environment, the poet walked for six hours to visit the grave of his deceased friend. The poet suffered from the pain of the war, and his friend was sleeping underground. The use of metaphors and restrained irony made the poem The charm is more profound.

Kouzhan refers to composing poems on the spur of the moment, without making a draft, and reciting them casually.

Xiao Hong's hometown is in Hulan County, Heilongjiang Province. She fled from the Northeast very early and entered the country. When the Pacific War broke out, she was unable to receive normal treatment due to illness and died in Hong Kong, which was extremely chaotic. The unfulfilled ambition of this talented female writer and her untimely death was a great stimulus to her friend Dai Wangshu, who was also fighting against Japan in Hong Kong at the time. But it was not easy to bury Xiao Hong at that time. Dai Wangshu and the others tried every means, and asked a reporter from Japan's "Asahi Shimbun" to get a certificate. A few friends got a cart and pulled it by themselves, and they walked six or seven times. Hours later, Xiao Hong's body was taken to Repulse Bay for burial. (Xiao Hong once wrote this before she died: "I will live with the blue sky and clear water forever, leaving the half of "The Red Mansion" for others to write.") However, later on, only a piece of writing "" was inserted on the beach of Repulse Bay. The wooden sign of "Xiao Hong's Tomb". A piece of loess and four big characters describe Xiao Hong's ups and downs and misfortunes during his lifetime, as well as the loneliness and sadness behind him.

"Six hours" indicates the long time, and "long distance" indicates the distance. These two words are realistic and imply the poet's deep and sincere friendship with the deceased.

"Loneliness" is not only the poet's state of mind when he rushes to the cemetery, but also a true portrayal of the poet's long-term state of mind; at the same time, it also implicitly refers to Xiao Hong's life, especially the situation in his later period. The two merge into one, forming the basis and most important theme of the whole poem. Emotional tones.

2. Why doesn’t the second line of the poem say “by the tomb” but “by the head”? What does "red camellia" mean?

Instead of saying "by the tomb" but by "by the head", it contains the poet's complicated feelings of deploring her premature death, hoping that she is still alive, and imagining that she is just sleeping temporarily.

The red camellia, like a burning torch, metaphors and praises the splendor of the deceased's life, and also reflects the solemnity and enthusiasm of the mourner's mood;

The camellia symbolizes perseverance and perseverance, and also expresses the silent resistance to the brutal people - at this time, Hong Kong fell to the enemy and was still in the midst of bloodshed.

3. What is the poet waiting for in the third line of the poem? Why did he say "the night is long"?

"I'm waiting" alludes to the expectation of victory in the war of resistance, and can also be seen as an reflection on the ill-fated life.

1. Read the poem aloud and talk about how the author expresses the idea of "unity" based on the title?

All leaves and one leaf, all flowers and one flower, all trees and one tree, "one is in everything, and everything is in one", they are all many-to-one relationships, "many" It is originally an antagonistic relationship with "one", but the author uses the word "is" to equate it here, and uses opposites to express the idea of "unity".

2. Why does the author think that "many" is "one"? Why is it said that "many is a lie"? Please share your understanding of this sentence based on the author's answer.

The author believes that "all fruits are the same" and therefore "multiplicity is a lie". The author first wrote about flowers and then about leaves. However, no matter what kind of posture they have, the essence of flowers and leaves is to bear fruits, and the essence of fruits is to transmit life. From this point of view, all flowers, leaves, and fruits have their own essence, and from the perspective of life inheritance, this essence is no different. Therefore, multiplicity is the appearance of the existence of many living things, and their essences are all the same.
