background link
"Farewell at Crossing Jingmen" was written by Li Bai when he left Shu. Jingmen has been known as the throat of Chu and Shu since ancient times. Li Bai left Shu this time and took a long boat ride by water, passing through Bayu, out of the Three Gorges, and headed straight beyond Jingmen Mountain. The purpose was to visit the hometown of Chu in Hubei and Hunan. At this time, the young poet was very interested. He sat on the boat and admired the towering mountains on the west bank of Wushan Mountain. Along the way, the scenery in front of him gradually changed. When the boat passed the Jingmen area, his field of vision suddenly broadened and it was a unique scenery.
Farewell PPT at Dujingmen, Part 2: Text Interpretation
Farewell at Jingmen Gate
Crossing the distance outside Jingmen, I came to travel from the state of Chu.
Poetic meaning: (I took a boat) to travel beyond Jingmen Mountain and roam the ancient Chu land.
[Analysis] explains the purpose of the poet's trip: to travel to Jingmen and travel to Chu.
The mountains end with the plains, and the river flows into the wilderness.
Under the moon, there is a flying mirror, and the clouds form a sea tower.
Poetry: The mountains gradually disappear with the appearance of the plains. After the Yangtze River rushes into the vast wilderness, it still flows eastward. The moon is reflected in the water, like a bright mirror flying from the sky. The colorful clouds change, forming a scene like a mirage.
Farewell PPT at Crossing Jingmen, Part 3: Read ancient poems again, discuss and think:
1. What role does the first couplet play in the whole poem?
The first couplet captures the title of the poem and explains the purpose of the poet's trip: to travel far to Jingmen and travel to Chu. It has the function of threading the needle and threading the whole poem.
2. How do you understand "the mountains end with the plains, and the rivers flow into the wilderness"?
The poet uses distant views to outline a majestic picture of the Yangtze River. The word "sui" vividly reproduces the gradual change and movement of the mountains and plains, giving people a sense of spatial flow. The word "enter" is written as the water and sky meet in the distance, as if the river flows into the wilderness, giving people unlimited space for imagination. The poems also contain the poet's joyful mood and vigorous vitality.
3. How does the poem "Farewell at the Jingmen Gate" reflect the romantic style of Li Bai's poems: "The flying mirror under the moon, the clouds forming sea towers"?
The previous sentence writes that at night, looking up at the sky, the bright moon is shining; looking down at the river, the bright moon is reflected like a mirror. With the word "fly", it is full of dynamic and full of charm.
The next sentence writes that during the day, looking up at the sky, colorful clouds rise and change like a mirage. The word "knot" imitates human emotions and evokes associations. This couplet has a novel imagination and expresses the poet's joy of walking with the moon and floating with the clouds.
4. What rhetorical techniques are used in the last couplet? what's the effect?
Personification technique. Obviously he is attached to his hometown, but he uses the mountains and rivers of his hometown to say that his hometown is attached to him. This couplet expresses the parting meaning of the Yangtze River water sending "me" away, and the attachment to my hometown is beyond words.
