"Farewell to Jingmen" PPT courseware 3
About the Author
Li Bai (701-762), a great poet of the Tang Dynasty, was named Taibai and also known as Qinglian Jushi. His ancestral home was Chengji, Longxi. He was known as the "Poet Immortal". He was another outstanding romantic poet in my country after Qu Yuan. He often expressed his ambitions and ideals with unrestrained passion, and criticized the society and the powerful with a strong rebellious spirit and arrogant attitude. His poetry was majestic and bold, with rich imagination, natural language, and harmonious and varied rhythms. Du Fu once gave a very high evaluation of Li Bai's poems: "The writing is so shocking that it makes the wind and rain startle, and the poems make the ghosts and gods weep."
Information Link
Li Bai's famous cycle of poems "Ancient Style" criticized the malpractices of the government and lamented that people with lofty ideals could not realize their ambitions; his Yuefu poems "The Road is Hard", "Liangfu Yin", "A Song of Everlasting Sorrow" and so on expressed his grief at being unable to realize his talents; poems such as "Climbing the North Tower of Xie Xuancheng in Autumn", "Looking at the Waterfall at Lushan Mountain" and "Dreaming of Wandering on Tianmu Mountain and Chanting a Farewell Song" depicted the magnificent mountains and rivers of the motherland with their magical pen full of imagination.
Although some of Li Bai's poems also imply the decadent mood of life being like a dream and reveling in alcohol, the main theme of his poems is the uplifting spirit of being dissatisfied with the darkness of society and politics and pursuing freedom and liberation of mind and body. Li Bai is one of the greatest poets in the history of Chinese literature. Together with Du Fu, he is known as "Li Du" and has had a profound influence on the poetry creation of later generations.
writing background
Li Bai traveled almost all over the country's famous mountains and rivers throughout his life, and wrote many famous lines and poems praising the country's magnificent mountains and rivers. This poem was written by the poet in the 13th year of Kaiyuan (726) when he left his relatives and traveled far away. When he left Sichuan and arrived at Jingmen, he wrote it as a farewell poem to his friends. The poet had lived in Sichuan until he was 25 years old. This was the first time he left his hometown and began to travel around the country, ready to realize his ideals and ambitions. He left Sichuan and headed east. This poem was written during his travels. From the meaning of the poem, the poet and the farewell were on the same boat, and he chanted the farewell poem in the boat.
Overall perception
The poem "Farewell at Crossing Jingmen" presents a magnificent picture composed of high mountains, big rivers, plains, bright moon and colorful clouds through the description of the scenery seen along the way from Sichuan to Jingmen. It expresses the poet's praise for the beautiful rivers and mountains of the motherland and his sincere feelings of infinite love for his hometown.

Crossing far: crossing far. Chu: Chu territory.
Plain: a plain. Wilderness: a vast expanse of wilderness.

The moon is like a flying mirror, and clouds are forming a sea tower. (Last couplet)

Translation
The poet sailed downstream and, after a long journey, arrived outside Jingmen.
The mountains have come to an end, and the river is flowing majestically in this vast wilderness.
The bright moon was floating in the sky, like a mirror in the air, and the clouds were lush and unpredictable on the surface of the river, like a mirage.
Although I have moved to a foreign place, I am still attached to the mountains and rivers of my hometown. They will always accompany me, a wanderer, no matter how far away they are.
