Exploring EnglishPPT, part 2: key sentence patterns

Sentence pattern 1 not only...but (also)... not only...but also...

Can connect two grammatically parallel words, phrases, or clauses.

[Original sentence in textbook]

Not only can you post specific questions, but you can also broaden your knowledge by reading posts from other English learners around the world. Your knowledge.

【Key Points Must Remember】

(1) Not only A but also B + predicate verb + others. (The singular and plural of the predicate verb are determined by B, that is: proximity principle);

(2) not only... but also... connects two clauses and not only... is at the beginning of the sentence, the clause after not only must use partial inversion, but the clause after but also does not Flip, that is, "flip forward but not backward."

[Instructions for studying the law]

Similar to not only... but also... connecting the coordinating subjects, the singular and plural forms of the predicate verb are based on the proximity principle:

neither... nor...

either... or...

not... but...

Sentence pattern 2: preposition + what clause

[Original sentence in textbook]

People say that the British always play safe with what they eat.

People say that the British are always very careful about what they eat.

[Sentence analysis]

In the sentence, what introduces the object clause and serves as the object of the preposition with, which means "the thing/person of...", which is equivalent to the thing (s)/the person (s) that....

My mind wasn’t on what he was saying, so I’m afraid I missed half of it.

My mind wasn't on what he said, and I'm afraid I missed half of it.

【Misunderstanding Warning】

(1) When what introduces a noun clause, what serves as the subject, object or predicate in the clause; while when that introduces a noun clause, it only plays a connecting role in the clause and does not serve as any sentence component. That is usually omitted in object clauses, but it cannot be omitted in subject clauses, predicative clauses and appositive clauses.

(2) Prepositions are generally not followed by object clauses leading to that.

You can depend on that he promised to you. (×)

You can depend on what he promised to you.(√)

You can count on what He promises you.
