Part One: The Origin of Constellations

The Big Dipper stars form a bucket in the sky. The Big Dipper is located in the constellation Ursa Major. People have found that the handle of the Big Dipper points differently in different seasons: the handle faces east in spring; the handle faces south in summer; the handle faces west in autumn; and the handle faces north in winter.

Observe Polaris

In the Northern Hemisphere, the elevation of the line of sight to Polaris is equal to the local geographical latitude. In the northern hemisphere, Polaris is the best reference for pointing north. When people face Polaris, true north is exactly in front of them. When you find the North Star at night, you also find the direction of true north.

Find the North Star:

First look for the Big Dipper, then connect the two stars in front of the mouth of the Big Dipper and extend it about 5 times the distance toward the mouth of the Big Dipper to find the North Star.
