The Opium Destruction in Humen: (June 1839) was a historical event in which the Qing Dynasty government appointed Lin Zexu, the Imperial Envoy, to destroy opium intensively in Humen, Guangdong. This incident later became the trigger for the First Opium War, and the Treaty of Nanjing was also signed by the Qing government during that war.
The proliferation of opium has brought serious disasters to the Chinese nation. The massive outflow of silver directly threatened the finances of the Qing government; many officials and soldiers smoked opium, which not only severely damaged their physiques, but also led to political corruption and the weakening of the military's combat effectiveness. These have attracted the attention of some insightful people in the ruling class. At the end of 1838, Emperor Daoguang sent Lin Zexu, who advocated the ban on opium, as an imperial envoy to Guangdong to ban opium.
