Description
"Dance Watching - Dedicated to the Indian Dancers Kalama Sisters" PPT Courseware 2
Born in Tamil Nadu, South India, Bharatanatyam is the most representative form of Indian classical dance.
The word "Bharata" is composed of the three prefixes of the Sanskrit words "expression", "melody" and "rhythm", so some people interpret it as "the art of skillfully combining expression, melody and rhythm". The early Bharatanatyam dance was called "Dasi Attam" because the performer was "Devi Dasi" who was called the maid of the god in the temple. During every religious festival, they dance in front of the statues or in the procession of worshiping the gods, gradually forming the prototype of Bharatanatyam dance. After the 18th century, Bharatanatyam dance entered the court, and was processed and refined by four music and dance masters in the court, and gradually formed the current Bharatanatyam dance.
Bharatanatyam dance has strong and powerful movements, sharp edges and corners, many changes, and fast speed; it requires strict coordination of hands, eyes, body, method, and steps, and pays attention to the instantaneous changes in facial expressions of happiness, anger, sadness, and joy. It is a very technical skill. A strong, difficult dance. A complete performance of Bharatanatyam dance, including at least 6 sections, usually performed by only one actress. Each performance ranges from 3 hours to 5-6 hours.
Learning new words:
Jingmu (mù), frown (pín cù), charming (càn)
Anger (chēn) All-powerful (chì zhà)
Extremely beautiful (yán)
Jingmu: quiet and solemn.
All-powerful: Describing the momentum as being very powerful.
All the skills of the whole body: the ability of the whole body.
Breathing is connected: Breathing is related, a metaphor for close relationship. It is also said to be closely related.
Why is it said that Kalama "in the carnival of dance, she forgot the audience and herself"?
Karama's dance is very beautiful, as if it is "flying", but "flying" alone is not enough. Only with complete devotion of the soul can one achieve the state of "beauty". She herself is a part of the dance, her body and mind are integrated, transcending the carrier of form and entering the realm of free flying. The real dance is the dance of the soul, not the dance of skills.
