Description
"Confucius Gives Way" PPT courseware
Confucius gives way
A stone tablet (bēi) is erected on the roadside in Wulibao Village, Xiuwu County, Henan Province. The stone tablet is engraved with five large characters in regular script (kǎi): Confucius asks about rituals.
More than 2,000 years ago, the story of Confucius asking a seven-year-old child Xiang Tuo (tuó) for gifts happened here.
In order to spread his teachings, Confucius drove around various countries accompanied by his students. One day, they came to the state of Zheng.
A child was building something (qì) with rubble and broken tiles (wǎ) on the road, blocking (dǎn) Confucius's car. The driver Zi Lu shouted: "Hey, kid, get out of the way, our car is going to pass!"
The child ignored Zilu and continued to pile up the rubble.
Confucius got down from the car, walked up to the child and said, "Son, would you give way to our car?"
The child raised his head, looked at Confucius, and said, "Old man, look at what I built."
Confucius looked down and saw, haha, there was a city made of rubble and tiles on the ground.
Confucius was in a hurry and said unhappily: "Son, why don't you understand etiquette? You blocked the car and missed our way!"
The child blinked and asked Confucius: "I don't understand etiquette? So, old man, do you think the car should give way to the city, or should the city give way to the car?"
From this story, what kind of person do you think Confucius was?
The child is blocking the road by setting up a castle and asking questions - he doesn't understand etiquette.
Confucius went around the "city" to make way and asked for courtesy - if three people are walking together, there must be my teacher.
