The legend of Spring Festival

In ancient China, there was a beast called "Nian". "Nian" is extremely ferocious. It lives deep on the bottom of the sea all year round. Only on a specific day does it climb ashore to devour livestock and harm people. Therefore, every New Year's Eve, people flee to the mountains to avoid the harm of "Nian". One New Year's Eve, an old man came begging from outside the village. There was a scene of rush and panic in the countryside, and no one paid him any attention. Only the old woman gave him some food and advised him to go up the mountain quickly to avoid the "year". The old man lifted up his beard and said with a smile: "If my mother-in-law lets me stay at home all night, I will definitely 'Nian' is driven away." The old woman continued to persuade, but the old beggar smiled and said nothing.

At midnight, "Nian" broke into the village. It found that the atmosphere in the village was different from previous years: at the east end of the village, the old woman lived in her husband's house, with red paper on the door and brightly lit candles in the house.

"Nian" trembled all over and screamed strangely. As he approached the door, there was a sudden "crackling" explosion in the courtyard. "Nian" was shocked and ran away in confusion. It turns out that "Nian" is most afraid of the color red, fire and explosions.

The next day was the first day of the first lunar month. People who had returned from the refuge were surprised to see that the village was safe and sound. At this time, the old woman suddenly realized and hurriedly told the villagers about the beggar's promise to the old man. This incident quickly spread in the surrounding villages, and people all knew how to drive away "Nian". From then on, every New Year's Eve, every family posted red couplets and set off firecrackers; every household lit candles and watched the New Year's Eve. Early in the morning on the first day of the Lunar New Year, we also visit relatives and friends to say hello. This custom spreads widely and has become the most solemn traditional festival among Chinese people.

The origin of the Spring Festival

The "Spring Festival" originated from the activities of worshiping gods and ancestors at the beginning and end of the Yin and Shang Dynasties in China, commonly known as "December Festival". In the early years of the Western Zhou Dynasty, there was an annual custom of celebrating the harvest and worshiping ancestors at the turn of the old and new years, which can be considered the prototype of the "year".

The name of the year started from the Zhou Dynasty. During the period of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty, Sima Qian suggested that the Spring Festival should be held on the first day of the first lunar month, which continues to this day.

Chinese New Year customs:

1. Sweep dust

Because "dust" and "chen" are homophonic, sweeping dust in the New Year has the meaning of "removing the old and spreading the new", and its purpose is to sweep away all bad luck and bad luck.

2. Pasting Spring Festival Couplets Spring couplets originate from ancient peach charms. Peach charms are rectangular peach boards hung on both sides of the door. Write the names of the two gods "Shen Tu" and "Yulei" on it to drive away ghosts and ward off evil spirits. Every Spring Festival, people always replace the old peach charms with new peach charms.

3. Apply window grilles

Among the people, people also like to paste various paper-cuts - window grilles - on their windows.

4. Paste the word "福" upside down

The word "福" refers to blessing and luck, expressing people's yearning for a happy life and their wishes for a better future. In order to more fully reflect this yearning and wish, some people simply paste the word "福" upside down, which means "happiness has arrived" and "blessing has arrived".
