Chen Gang is from Shanghai. He studied music with his father Chen Gexin since he was a child, and started studying piano with Hungarian pianist Valer at the age of ten. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he joined the military art troupe and began composing music at the age of fifteen. He has written some a cappella choruses, piano intermezzos and other works.

In 1955, he entered the Composition Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied under Ding Shande, Sang Tong and Soviet experts. After graduation, he stayed at the school to teach. When he was in his fourth year of college, he collaborated with He Zhanhao to write the violin concerto "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" which was well-known at home and abroad. Later, he wrote violin works such as "Morning in Miaoling", "I Love My Motherland, Taiwan", "Sunshine Shines on Taxkorgan", "Qingshui River Love Song" and other instrumental works.

He Zhanhao was born in Hejiashan Village in August 1933. He loved music when he was young, and later became an actor in the Zhejiang Art Troupe.

In 1957, he was admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he explored and practiced the nationalization of violin performance. In 1959, he collaborated with his classmate Chen Gang to compose the violin concerto "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" based on Yue opera tones, and has since become one of the famous figures in the Chinese music scene.

After "Butterfly Lovers", he created a large number of musical works such as "Diary of a Martyr", "Never Forget the Past", "Longhua Tower", "Farewell", "Prairie Female Militia", "Peacock Flies Southeast", etc.

Calling He Zhanhao a "musical wizard" is not an exaggeration at all. Although he became famous for "Butterfly Lovers", he traveled in the ocean of music, but mainly he learned to sing children's songs from his grandmother when he was a baby in the countryside.

He Zhanhao was admitted to the Orchestral Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1957, majoring in violin. At that time, they often went to the countryside to perform, and every time they played foreign music. He Zhanhao slowly discovered that fewer and fewer people were listening to them play the piano. He began to think, could he use the violin to play music that Chinese people would like to hear? At first, He Zhanhao composed the string quartet "Little Butterfly Lovers" using Yue opera tones, which was his first attempt to use Western instruments to play Chinese opera music.

In the spring of 1959, Chen Gang from the composition department was sent to collaborate with him. After three months of discussion and consideration, the song was finally completed. Interestingly, there was no part about "turning into a butterfly" in the song at that time, because they firmly believed that young people in New China should not be superstitious. The leaders of the Conservatory of Music were dumbfounded after hearing this and pointed out that this was a romantic creative technique. Only then did they "reassuredly" make up for the "turning into a butterfly", so today's 26-minute violin concerto "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" is known as "our own symphony in China".
