This poem was written by Chairman Mao Zedong in December 1961 after he read Lu You's poem "Yong Mei" and used it contrary to its meaning. Lu You, a great patriotic poet in the Southern Song Dynasty. He was born in an era when the feudal ruling class reluctantly sought peace from the invading forces. His patriotic ambition was of no use, and he retreated to his hometown in his later years. In his poem "Yong Mei", he showed a tone of self-admiration, desolation and depression. Chairman Mao's poem uses the original tune and title of Lu You, but the mood is completely opposite.
