1. Analyze the role of environment

There are three main descriptions of environment in the novel:

(1) Description of the scene in which various families in the town prepare for “blessing”;

(2) The description of the snowy day after Sister Xianglin’s death;

(3) The description of the blessing scene in "my" eyes at the end.

(1) Every family in the town is preparing to “bless” (paragraphs 1-2)

The beginning exaggerates the lively and busy atmosphere of Luzhen's year-end blessings. Words such as "heavy", "dark" and "a mess" reveal the author's aversion to this depressing atmosphere.

Blessing is the "year-end ceremony of Lu Town". On this day, people want to "welcome the God of Fortune and pray for good luck in the coming year." And the woman who made the "blessing gift" "has her arms soaked in the water and is red", and the day goes by. Pay your own hardships every night.

It reveals the conflicts between people and foreshadows the social nature of Xianglin's wife's tragedy.

Through the description of "It's the same every year...it's naturally the same this year", it points out the situation in the countryside after the Revolution of 1911: class relations remain the same, customs and habits remain the same, and feudal ideas remain the same.

The part inserted after the dash reflects that in a society where there is a great disparity between rich and poor, the poor are not blessed.

These sentences outline the social environment at that time and reveal the social basis of Xianglin's wife's tragedy.

(2) The snowy day after Sister Xianglin’s death (paragraph 32)

The snowy weather at the end of the lunar calendar in Luzhen exaggerated the desolate and silent atmosphere, highlighting the desolation after the death of Mrs. Xianglin and my "sad" mood. The comments in the middle are ironic, expressing "my" hatred for this dark society. The "comfort" in the last sentence is a word of anger and sadness.

(3) "Blessing" in "my" eyes (last paragraph)

From memory to reality. The first sentence is a transition, which corresponds to the previous sentence that turns to memory, exaggerating the lively atmosphere and contrasting the sadness of Xianglin's tragic death.

The last sentence is deliberately fictitious. The tragic scene of Xianglin's death and the atmosphere of the saints in heaven and earth "preparing to bring infinite happiness to the people of Lu Town" form a sharp contrast, deepening the exposure of the murderous nature of the old society. The layout is from beginning to end. The echoes make the structure of the novel more perfect.

The specific description of the environment promotes the development of the plot, and at the same time increases the reality and appeal of the characters.

2. Analyze the meaning and function of the title "Blessing"

Thinking: This novel tells the tragic story of Sister Xianglin. Why not use the title "Sister Xianglin" instead of "Blessing"?

(1) "Blessing" is the clue to the development of the story.

The novel begins with people in Lu Town busy preparing "blessings" and ends with the sound of "blessing" firecrackers in Lu Town awakening "I" who was remembering. "Blessing" is the plot clue of this tragic story. The development of the plot, The tragic fate of the characters is closely related to the blessings.

(2) "Blessing" is the social background of the story.

The "blessing" scene provides a special social background for the characters' activities and events. In this "blessing" style painting, there is a heavy shadow of feudal ethics. This is also the social environment for the tragic life of the characters; in the old society , the working people have no blessings to wish, no blessings to speak of, and Mrs. Xianglin was forced into a desperate situation precisely because of this blessing.

(3) "Blessing" implies the contrast between the characters' fates.

Several major changes in the tragic fate of Sister Xianglin were concentrated in the specific environment of "blessing" in Lu Town. Xianglin's wife died in the sound of blessings "preparing to bring infinite happiness to the people of Lu Town".

With the title "Blessings", the "foolish cheers of the murderous man" and the "cry of the miserable weak" are clearly placed in front of the readers, forming a strong contrast, which enhances the tragedy of Xianglin's sister-in-law's experience and highlights the tragedy. The theme also contains the deep meaning of the author's irony. The title "Sister-in-law Xianglin" does not have such an artistic effect.
