"Beautiful Chinese Characters" PPT
Part One: The Origin of Chinese Characters
From the ancient legend of Cangjie's creation of characters to the discovery of oracle bone inscriptions more than 100 years ago, Chinese scholars of all ages have been dedicated to uncovering the mystery of the origin of Chinese characters.
Regarding the origin of Chinese characters, there are various theories in ancient Chinese literature, such as "knotting", "bagua", "pictures", "scripts", etc. Ancient books also generally record the legend of the creation of characters by Cangjie, the historian of the Yellow Emperor.
Cangjie's theory of coining characters
Cangjie: Shi Huang's family, a native of Baishui County, Weinan City, Shaanxi Province. "Shuowen Jiezi" records: Cangjie was the historian who created characters during the Yellow Emperor's period, and was revered as the "Sage of Characters." Legend has it that Cangjie was born with "double pupils and four eyes."
Beautiful Chinese Character PPT, Part 2: The Evolution of Chinese Characters
Discovery of Oracle
During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, there was a man named Wang Yirong who was the official in charge of the Imperial Academy, the highest academic institution at that time. One time, he saw a traditional Chinese medicine called dragon bone. He felt strange and looked through the residue. Unexpectedly, there was a pattern that looked like words on it.
So he bought all the keels and found that each keel had a similar pattern. He was convinced that this was a kind of writing that was relatively complete and should be from the Yin and Shang dynasties. Later, people found the place where the dragon bones were unearthed - Xiaotun Village, Anyang, Henan Province, and a large number of dragon bones were unearthed. Because these keel bones are mainly the oracle bones of turtles and beasts, they are named "oracle bones".
Oracle bone inscriptions: characters carved on tortoise shells and animal bones. They are highly pictographic and have unstable font directions.
Bronze inscriptions: refers to the inscriptions engraved on Yin and Zhou bronzes, also called bell and tripod inscriptions. The Shang and Zhou dynasties were the age of bronzes. The ritual vessels of bronzes were represented by tripods, and the musical instruments were represented by bells. "Zhongding" is synonymous with bronzes. The level of pictography is still relatively high, but there is a trend of linearization. The bronze inscriptions on the "Mao Gong Tripod" cast during the reign of King Xuan of Zhou Dynasty are very representative. Its inscriptions total 32 lines and 497 words, making it the longest inscription on a bronze unearthed.
Big Seal Script: Also called Zhou Wen, it inherits the bronze inscriptions at the top and the Small Seal Script at the bottom.
The representative of big seal script is "Shiguwen", which has a powerful and solemn style. The font structure is neat, the strokes are evenly rounded, there are horizontal and vertical strokes, and the shape tends to be square.
Xiaozhuan: After the Qin Dynasty unified the six kingdoms, Xiaozhuan became the common writing throughout the country. The Xiaozhuan font is regular and well-proportioned, the glyphs are simplified, and the degree of pictography is further reduced.
Beautiful Chinese Character PPT, Part 3: The Structure of Chinese Characters: Six Books
Xu Shen's "Shuowen Jiezi Preface"
The six ways to form Chinese characters are the six books:
Pictogram, meaning, meaning
Phonetic, transfer, borrowing
It is generally believed that the first four are word formation methods, and the last two are word usage methods.
Pictograms: Simplified graphics of things. They are the earliest Chinese symbols created.
For example: "sun" is written as , "month" is written as , water is written as , and cow is written as .
Referring to things: that is, pictographic characters plus symbols form new characters.
For example: the word "明" is written as , which means "sun" and "moon" bring light. The word "Dan" is written as , which means the sun rises above the horizon.
It is formed by adding suggestive symbols on the basis of pictographic characters. For example, "edge" is added with a dot on "knife" to represent the edge of the knife; "曰" is added with a dot on the mouth to represent the sound produced by the mouth.
"Kuiyi": The word-making method of putting two or more pictographic characters or referential characters together and combining their meanings into a new meaning is "Kuiyi".
Beautiful Chinese character PPT, the fourth part: the cultural connotation carried by Chinese characters
Mr. Lu Xun once said,
Chinese characters have “three beauties”:
The beauty of the meaning touches the heart, one thing;
The beauty of the sound is to be felt by the ears, the second is;
The beauty of form is the third factor.
Calligraphy Appreciation - "Dance on Paper"
Appreciation of running script: The "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Collection" by Wang Xizhi, a calligrapher of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, was described by predecessors as "a dragon leaps over the Tianmen, a tiger lies in the Phoenix Pavilion", and is praised as "the best running script in the world". The "Manuscript of Sacrifice to Nephew" written by Yan Zhenqing of the Tang Dynasty was written vigorously and unrestrainedly, and the ancients rated it as "the second running script in the world". Su Shi's "Huangzhou Cold Food Post" is known as "the third running script in the world".
Appreciation of cursive script
Huaisu is an outstanding calligrapher in Chinese history. His cursive calligraphy is called "Kuaicao". His pen is round and powerful, turning like a circle, unrestrained and smooth, and completed in one go.
Zhang Xu's cursive calligraphy: the pen is carefree and uninhibited, and its wild gestures are often shocking. Later generations called them "Zhang Dian Su Kuang" or "Dian Zhang Drui Su".
