Part One: The Origin of Chinese Characters

Chinese characters have a history of five thousand years. It evolved from note symbols and note pictures. As early as the late Neolithic Age, pictures and symbols appeared on painted pottery, which was the predecessor of Chinese characters. The earliest mature Chinese characters that can be seen today are the characters carved on animal bones and tortoise shells in the 14th century BC (Shang Dynasty), called oracle bone inscriptions. More than 4,600 single characters have been used, of which picophonetic characters account for a certain proportion, making it a mature script.

Legend: Cangjie coined characters

Legend has it that Cangjie was born with "double pupils and four eyes". There are only three people with double pupils recorded in Chinese history books: Yu Shun, Cang Jie and Xiang Yu. Yu Shun was a saint of abdication and filial piety, while Cangjie was a saint of literature and Xiang Yu was a saint of martial arts.

According to legend, Cangjie "began to write a written deed in lieu of a knotted rope." Before that, people knotted ropes to remember things, and later developed to using knives to carve symbols on wood and bamboo to remember things. With the development of history, the methods of knotting ropes and carving wood were far from meeting the needs, which led to the urgent need to create characters.

One year, Cangjie went hunting in the south and saw a large turtle with many blue patterns on its back. Cangjie discovered that the patterns on the turtle's back were actually meaningful. He thought that since patterns could represent meanings, if a rule was set, wouldn't they be used to convey feelings and record things?

Cangjie observed everywhere, the distribution of stars in the sky, the veins of mountains and rivers on the ground, the traces of birds, beasts, insects and fish, and the shapes of vegetation and utensils. He traced and painted them, creating various symbols, and determined the meaning of each symbol. Cangjie called this symbol "zi".

Beautiful Chinese Character PPT, Part 2: The Evolution of Chinese Characters

1. The evolution of Chinese characters has gone through more than 6,000 years.

2. The evolution process of fonts is roughly as follows:

Bronze inscriptions are characters carved on bronze vessels during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. They are also called "Zhongdingwen". The early fonts of this type of writing are similar to oracle bone inscriptions, and some still retain traces of early pictorial characters; later stages are similar to Xiaozhuan. There are five to six thousand single characters in bronze inscriptions that have been collected, most of which can be interpreted. The physical structure of bronze inscriptions is relatively mature, and some bronze inscriptions from the Zhou Dynasty are as long as 500 words.

Xiaozhuan is a popular writing system in the Qin Dynasty, also known as "Qin Zhuan". During the Warring States Period, characters in different parts of China had different shapes; after Qin Shihuang unified China, he organized and simplified the characters, and established a standard font based on "Da Zhuan" (also known as "Zhenwen", which was popular in the Qin State during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period) , this is "Xiao Zhuan". This important measure of the Qin Dynasty to unify the national writing system played a great role in the standardization of Chinese characters.

Official script was a common writing language in the Han Dynasty. It started in the Wei Dynasty and extended to the Three Kingdoms. It is also called "Han Li", "Zuoshu", "Bafen", etc. The early official script retained some traces of the small seal script; later, Bo Zhen's brushwork increased, which became a significant feature of the official script font. The emergence of official script provided the basis for later The regular script laid the foundation and marked an important turning point in the history of the development of Chinese characters, that is, from the ancient writing stage to the modern writing stage.

Cursive script began around the early Han Dynasty. Early cursive script was a quick variation of official script, called "Cao Li" and later "Zhang Cao". After the end of the Han Dynasty, the traces of official script strokes retained in Zhang Cao were removed, forming a kind of "Jin Cao" with continuous and convoluted strokes and borrowed radicals from each other. During the Tang Dynasty, a kind of "kuangcao" with more indulgent and difficult-to-recognize strokes appeared. Nowadays, the so-called cursive script generally refers to "jincao".

Regular script is a font that began to appear in the late Han Dynasty, became popular in the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, and is still in use today. The dot paintings in regular script are rich in forms, completely free from the influence of seal script, and have a single configuration. Because its shape is upright and its strokes are straight, it is a model, so it is called "regular script", also called "formal script" and "real script". Many calligraphers in the past dynasties are famous for their regular script.

The strokes above resemble words but not words, like paintings but not paintings; the words are integrated into the paintings, and the paintings are included in the words; between the strokes, there is a graceful dance; in the dance rhyme, the pen and ink are indulgent; it fully demonstrates the beauty of Chinese characters "into the painting".

She looks like a "person", the word "Beijing", and the word "文", which indicates that our capital Beijing will host a "Humanities Olympics". We seem to see a dancer full of enthusiasm and hope, passionate and energetic, dancing out the heroic joy of the Chinese people; we seem to see an athlete full of vitality and vigor, strong and transcendent, running out of the Olympic Games " "Faster, Higher, Stronger" concept; we also seem to see a leaping China welcoming people from all over the world who love sports and love peace with enthusiasm.

Beautiful Chinese Character PPT, Part 4: Exploration:

1. Do you think Chinese characters will be eliminated in the computer age? Why?

Reference content: The Chinese people have used their own ingenuity to solve the problem of inputting Chinese characters into computers and transmitting them online, and the input speed is getting faster and faster. In recent years, Chinese character handwriting technology and voice input technology have become the future development trend of Chinese computer input methods. These technologies continue to meet the needs of people who are not used to keyboard typing to use computers well. It can be seen that it is the computer that accepts the Chinese characters, not the computer that changes the Chinese characters. The ancient Chinese characters have proved the value of their existence with their vigorous vitality, and they are rejuvenated in the new era.

2. Do you think Chinese characters will be replaced by "pinyin characters"? Why?

Reference content: Our Chinese characters integrate form, sound and meaning. Its unique charm can never be changed and is irreplaceable. Even though Chinese pinyin can be used as an auxiliary tool for learning Chinese, it can never replace the Chinese characters themselves, because it does not and cannot have the unique charm of Chinese characters.

3. Do you think Chinese characters are often mixed with letters in books and periodicals nowadays? Why?

Reference content: Today's books and periodicals often include English letters, which reflects the increasingly frequent exchanges between China and foreign countries. Including letters in Chinese characters is simpler and more convenient for expression, but it will cause reading difficulties for people who do not understand English. If "WTO" is translated into "World Trade Organization", more Chinese people can understand it. From the perspective of maintaining the purity of our national language and characters, we should try to minimize the inclusion of English letters in Chinese characters.
