1. What are aquatic plants?

A group of plants that live in watery environments. Water-containing areas such as swamps, oceans, wetlands, rivers, lakes...etc.

Typical aquatic plants rely on water throughout their lives.

Common aquatic plants: such as rice, bagelia, duckweed, lotus, cattail, duckweed...etc.

Four major families of aquatic plants

1. Growing under the water: submersed plants

If it leaves the water, it will quickly lose water due to evaporation, wilt and die.

If the length of the plant exceeds the depth of the water, it will still bend under the water.

Typical representatives: Vallisneria, Planthurium, Hornweed, Waterweed...

2. Floating leaf family

The roots are fixed to the bottom of the water, the stems and leaves are completely submerged in the water, and they will emerge from the water when they bloom.

The leaves are usually flat to increase the area exposed to sunlight.

Most plants have both submerged and floating leaves.

There is a phenomenon of hibernation, and dormant buds are grown as tools to survive the winter.

Typical representatives: Taiwan's water lily, water lily, Indian cabbage, water lily...etc.

3. Floating Family

The root system floats, degenerates or becomes pendant. The spongy tissue of leaves or stems is developed and plays a floating role. Most plants have brightly colored flowers.

Typical representatives: lotus, duckweed, greenfoot, purple duckweed, waterweed, azolla...etc.

4. Aqueous family

It is the most diverse family among the four major families.

Some plants can live outside the water and have the characteristics of terrestrial plants.

The roots and a small part of the stems grow in the water, the stems and leaves stand in the air, the rhizome airways are developed, and the stems and leaves have thick cuticles.

Typical representatives: wild flowers, red polygonum, duckweed, cattails, Da'an water lily, Yilan water lily...etc.

Differences: Water hyacinth is a floating aquatic plant with petioles filled with air sacs that float on the water surface, while hornwort is a submerged aquatic plant.

What are the similarities and differences between aquatic plants and terrestrial plants such as trees and grasses?

The same thing: they all have roots, stems and leaves, they all reproduce, they all die, they all need sunlight, water and air, they all have chlorophyll, they all use sunlight and carbon dioxide to synthesize oxygen and organic nutrients. Life activities and growth processes are similar.

Differences: The living environment is different and the demand for water is different. Most aquatic plants are algae, which are inferior to terrestrial plants.
