Material 1 London Smog Incident

Since 1952, there have been 12 major smog events in London, caused by dust and sulfur dioxide emitted from coal burning. The smog forced all planes to ground their flights, cars drove with lights on during the day, and pedestrians found it difficult to walk. Smog incidents caused a surge in respiratory disease patients. In December 1952, more than 4,000 people died within five days, and more than 8,000 people died within two months.

Material 2 Los Angeles Photochemical Smog Incident

In the 1940s, 1950s and 1970s, it happened in Los Angeles, USA.

In the 1940s, the number of cars in Los Angeles reached 2.5 million, consuming more than 1,000 tons of gasoline every day. Hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, etc. in car exhaust are floating in the air on the streets. Under the strong sunlight, physical and chemical reactions occur, producing toxic light blue smoke, causing red and swollen eyes, pharyngitis, respiratory tract infections, etc. to a large number of citizens. The disease worsens and even causes disordered thinking, pulmonary edema and other diseases. The photochemical smog incident in 1955 caused more than 400 people to die from poisoning and respiratory failure. The incident in 1970 made three-quarters of the citizens sick.

Material 3: Air pollution incident in Maas Valley, Belgium

The Maas Valley Industrial Area in Belgium is located in a narrow valley with a large number of refineries, metal plants, and glass factories. These factories emit large amounts of waste gas and industrial dust, seriously affecting the health of local people. From December 1st to 5th, 1930, due to the influence of weather, there was a calm wind in the valley, and air pollutants could not spread out. At the same time, an inversion layer also appeared, making it difficult for pollutants to diffuse to high altitudes and could only accumulate in low altitudes, causing the concentration of pollutants to rise rapidly. As a result, more than 60 people died within a week. The mortality rate of people with heart disease and lung disease among citizens increased, and the mortality rate of livestock also increased significantly.
