"Ah, Captain, My Captain" PPT courseware
Whitman (1819~1892) American poet. Born in a small seaside village on Long Island, USA. My father was a landless farmer at the time. When Whitman was 5 years old, his family moved to Brooklyn, where his father worked as a carpenter and built houses. Whitman began attending elementary school there. Due to poverty, Whitman only attended elementary school for 5 years. He worked as a messenger, learned to type, and later worked as a rural teacher and editor. This life experience brought him into extensive contact with people and nature, which had a great impact on his later poetry creation. After 1841, he returned to New York and began to work as a printer. Soon he became a reporter and began to write. A few years later, he became the chief writer of a more prestigious newspaper, The Eagle, and continued to write essays and short commentaries against slavery and employer exploitation.
