In 1962, he entered the Vocal Music Department of Shanghai Conservatory of Music to study with Professor Wang Pinsu. Able to compose and sing well, he not only masters the skills of singing different types of songs, but also develops a unique singing method that combines real and false voices, strong and soft, and has a Chinese national style. He has a wide range of sounds, a pure style, a beautiful voice, and can change freely.

In 1980, he went to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to study again, making himself "one of the best in the music world". His songs such as "Carrying Tea Leaves to Beijing", "Fragrant Fish and Rice in Dongting", and "Song of Jigong" have become classic folk songs. In 1989, his album "Dongting Fish and Rice Fragrance" won China's first "Golden Record Award".
