Learn about impatiens
Other names of Impatiens: Nail Grass, Dioscorea, Goldilocks, and Golden Flower. Because its flower head, wings, tail, and feet are all upturned like a phoenix, it is also called Goldilocks.
Impatiens is an annual herbaceous flower of the family Impatiens, native to China and India. Impatiens flower stems are 40-100 cm tall.
Sowing is carried out from March to September, with April being the most suitable. Transplanting can be done at any time. The growing period is from April to September. After the seeds are sown in the pot, they usually sprout and grow leaves in about a week.
Impatiens like sunshine, are afraid of moisture, are heat-resistant but not cold-tolerant, and are suitable for growing in loose, fertile and slightly acidic soil.
Its flowers are shaped like butterflies and come in pink, red, purple, white and yellow, gold, etc., which are easy to change. Some varieties can have flowers of several colors on the same plant.
Practice questions
1. As long as the seeds are intact, they will surely germinate. ( )
2. Sunlight is an essential condition for seed germination. ( )
3. Most plant life begins as a seed. ( )
4. All plant life starts from seeds. ( )
1. Selection
Choose seeds that are plump and undamaged.
This process is called seed selection.
2. Flower pots and soil
Choose a suitable flower pot and place a small tile on the water outlet of the flower pot.
Do you know the function of covering with small tiles?
Prevent water accumulation in the flower pot from causing the impatiens seeds to rot
What are the requirements for soil selection?
(loose, fertile, slightly acidic)
3. Sowing
Use your fingers to make 2 to 3 small holes in the soil, about 1 cm deep. Place 1 impatiens seed in each small hole and cover it with soil.
Things to note when observing
1. The depth of sowing should be about 1 cm. After sowing, the hole after sowing should be filled with soil.
2. Water immediately after sowing. This is the first watering after sowing and it must be watered thoroughly. After the seedlings emerge, they must be placed in a place with sufficient light.
3. Pay attention to the flower pot soil and do not water it until it is too dry. It should be placed under direct sunlight throughout the day. When the third pair of true leaves grows, the head of the impatiens should be pinched off to allow it to grow more side branches, so that the plant shape will be beautiful in the future.
think about it
After the seeds are planted, what should we do to see the changes in them?
1. Place several layers of paper on the inner wall of a transparent glass, add some soil, and make the paper towel stick to the wall of the cup.
2. Place the impatiens seeds between the cup wall and the paper (place the seeds in different directions).
3. Pour an appropriate amount of water into the soil and do not let the seeds soak in the water.
What are the contents of the observations?
Pay attention to observe and record the growth changes of the seeds in the transparent glass:
● What grows from the seed first, then what comes out.
● The direction of root growth of seeds placed in different directions.
● Measure root length once a day and record it.
Pay attention to observe and record the growth changes of the impatiens in the flower pot:
● How many days does it take for impatiens seeds to emerge from the ground?
● What does a freshly unearthed impatiens look like.
● What the impatiens look like two days after being unearthed.
● Measure and record the height of your impatiens regularly.
● Observe and record the shape and number of impatiens leaves.
