Lu Xun (1881-1936) was a great modern Chinese writer and the founder of the New Literature Movement. His original name was Zhou Shuren, his courtesy name was Hencai, and he was a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang.

In May 1918, he used "Lu Xun" as his pen name for the first time and published the first vernacular novel "A Madman's Diary" in the history of modern Chinese literature.

Time backgroud:

1. The "political system" of this period, to be precise, should be the "period of rule by the Beiyang warlords". In the early years of the Republic of China, warlords were vying for power and political chaos was in chaos. In the 17 years from 1912 to 1928, the Beiyang government had 47 cabinets, which lasted no more than two or three years and only one day.

2. At this time, Lu Xun had lived in Peiping for more than 10 years, during which many major events had occurred. He was used to seeing "the king's flag changing at the top of the city." But no matter how the government changes, one thing remains unchanged, that is, internal suppression and external compromise. Warlords rely on foreign forces to put the people in dire straits. Lu Xun saw this deeply.

Creative background: On March 18, 1926, more than 5,000 people from all walks of life in Beijing gathered in front of Tiananmen Square to protest against the atrocities of imperialism and reactionary warlords. After the meeting, they chanted the slogan "Down with imperialism" and petitioned in front of the Duan Qirui government. . At this time, hundreds of soldiers with live ammunition suddenly opened fire on the crowd. Then the soldiers armed with sabers and bayonets chased and killed the crowd. 47 people were killed and more than 200 injured, creating the "March 18th Massacre" that shocked China and the world. Among the martyrs who died were Liu Hezhen and Yang Dequn, students of Beijing Women's Normal University.

Lu Xun called this day "the darkest day since the Republic of China."

After the tragedy, some reactionary literati published articles in newspapers and periodicals, creating various rumors and slandering the patriotic youth. The bloody suppression and shameless rumors and slander aroused Mr. Lu Xun's anger. Under this circumstance, Mr. Lu Xun wrote this article to express his condolences and remembrance of the patriotic students who suffered and sacrificed in this incident. At the same time, he also wanted to expose the cruelty and despicability of the reactionary warlords and the insidiousness of their lackeys and literati. Motivating people to fight their enemies more effectively.
