"Let's Build a Crater" Universe PPT Courseware 2

Crater Introduction

Crater means "bowl" in Greek. "Crater" usually refers to a bowl-shaped pit structure. Craters are also called "moon craters". Craters are the most prominent feature on the moon, covering almost the entire lunar surface. The dotted and overlapping craters on the moon are similar to the craters on the earth. There is a round flat land in the center, surrounded by a ring of raised mountains, with steep inner walls and gentle outer slopes. The height of the crater is generally between 7 and 8 kilometers.

Crater related knowledge

The largest crater on the moon is "Bailey Crater" near the south pole of the moon, with a diameter of 295 kilometers. Most of the craters are named after famous astronomers or other scholars. Six of the craters on the far side of the moon are named after ancient Chinese astronomers.

craters on the moon

The biggest feature of the lunar landscape is that there are many large and small craters. Most of the craters are circular, some are single, some are stacked together, and some are large rings within small rings.

Some craters are less than one thousand meters in diameter, while others can reach hundreds of kilometers in diameter.

There are two more scientific explanations for the formation of craters:

1. Shortly after the formation of the moon, the hot lava and gas inside the moon broke through the surface and ejected, forming craters, just like volcanic eruptions on the earth.

2. Meteoroid hits the moon. On May 13, 1972, a large meteorite hit the moon and formed a crater as big as a football field. The moonquakes caused by the impact were recorded by four moonseismometers placed on the lunar surface.

Supplementary knowledge Volcanic eruptions

When volcanoes erupt, they are powerful at first, and lava erupts high and far, accumulating outside the vent to form a crater. Later, the power of the jet decreased, and the jet accumulated only at the central bottom, forming a small peak, which is the central peak in the crater. Some injections are extinguished early, or they are not injected again, so there is no central peak.

experiment procedure

First spread the newspaper on the table to avoid staining the table and chairs during the experiment. Place the pot on the newspaper, cut a piece of transparent glue, fix the straw on the bottom of the pot, with the straw openings at both ends facing upwards, then pour in sand with a volume of 3/4 of the volume of the pot, representing the soil on the lunar surface, into the needle tube Inject an appropriate amount of water, then, while ensuring that the sand surface is flat, align the needle mouth with one end of the straw mouth and spray out water, and finally record the status on the record sheet with a pen.

What we found:

The diameter of the straw can change the size of the crater.
