About the Author
Lu Xun (1881-1936) was a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang. His original name was Zhou Zhangshou, and later he was renamed Zhou Shuren. In May 1918, he used the pen name "Lu Xun" for the first time to publish the first vernacular novel "A Madman's Diary" in the history of modern Chinese literature, which laid the foundation for new literature. The famous novels are included in the novel collection "The Scream". Mao Zedong evaluated Lu Xun as a great proletarian writer, thinker, revolutionist, critic, and writer. He was the leader of China's cultural revolution and the promoter of the Chinese national spirit.
writing background
In the 1920s, China was under the rule of warlords and bureaucrats. At the same time, imperialism controlled China's financial and economic lifelines, as well as China's political and military power. Due to this double oppression, the vast number of Chinese people, especially farmers, have become increasingly impoverished. They live a life of hunger and cold and no political rights.
Hometown PPT, the third part: clarifying ideas and grasping the main point
Article context
It describes the depressed scene of my hometown and "my" complicated mood when seeing my hometown, and explains "my" purpose of returning to my hometown.
Write about "my" experiences and feelings about returning to my hometown.
Write about “I”’s various feelings and ambivalence when leaving my hometown.
The title of the article is hometown. Think about it, this article has written about several hometowns. If you could use one word to summarize the content of the text, which word would be more appropriate? Please briefly explain your reasons.
The article organizes the material and expresses the theme through the changes in the scenery and characters in the hometown.
The purpose of this article
Discussion: "There are a thousand Hamlets for a thousand readers." There have always been different views on the purpose of this article. Based on the following points of view, talk about your understanding of the main purpose of this article.
Mr. Mao Dun believes that the theme of this novel is "sadness about the misunderstanding and estrangement between people." Longing for innocent human-to-human relationships.
Example: By describing the changes in the hometown, Runtu, and Yang Ersao, the novel reflects the social reality of rural bankruptcy and painful life of farmers before and after the Revolution of 1911; at the same time, it profoundly reveals the constraints and influence of feudal tradition on the people's popular spirit, and deeply expresses the author's feelings. Strong dissatisfaction with reality and fervent hope for a new life.
Hometown PPT, Part 4: Analysis of Characters and Appreciation of Scenery
Reasons for changes in Runtu
Superficial reasons:
1. Many children, famine, exorbitant taxes, soldiers, bandits, officials, and gentry.
2. Society is backward and ignorant.
deeper reason:
Imperialist aggression, feudal social system
Runtu's experience is a concrete portrayal of the oppressed and exploited peasants at that time. The author's purpose in creating this image is to reveal the disasters caused by the dual oppression of imperialism and feudal society to the Chinese people.
What role does the author play in creating the image of Second Sister-in-law Yang?
Function 1: Use Yang Ersao's selfishness and meanness to set off Runtu's kindness and simplicity.
Function 2: Using the changes of Yang Ersao to illustrate the impoverishment of small urban citizens, it reflects the breadth and depth of the social and economic bankruptcy at that time.
collaborative inquiry

Examples: (1) Use contrasting techniques to depict characters.
(2) Write characters from various aspects such as language, action, psychology, demeanor, etc.
(3) Able to write with the character’s personality in mind.
Hometown PPT, Part 5: Writing Characteristics and Difficulties Exploration
Character comparison
The hometown has not changed. Generation after generation, the Runtu people live and struggle under the dark semi-colonial and semi-feudal system, repeating the same tragic fate; the hometown has changed again, with heavier exploitation, deeper oppression, and the fate of the toiling people has also changed from generation to generation. A generation more miserable.
"Hope does not mean something exists or nothing. It is just like the road on the earth: in fact, there is no road on the earth. When there are more people walking on it, it becomes a road."
The author compares hope to the road on earth, and the ending is full of philosophy. It tells people: If you only have hope and don’t struggle and pursue it, hope means nothing; if you have hope and strive and practice it consistently, hope means nothing. When people run towards the road of hope, they will usher in a new life.
Difficulties to explore
What kind of person is "I"?
"I" stayed away from my hometown more than 20 years ago and lived a hard and tossing life. When I returned to my hometown, I saw the decline and desolation of my hometown, the poverty and misery of the people in my hometown, and the distortion of their pure humanity. I felt painful, sad and disappointed. But "I" am not desperate. "I" yearn for a beautiful hometown. "I" hope that the people in my hometown can live a new life. Therefore, "I" is not a depressed intellectual, but a petty bourgeois intellectual with a democratic and progressive ideological tendency who sympathizes with and loves the working people.
The "I" in the novel has the shadow of the author, but is not the same as the author.
