2. Pollination and fertilization

When the stamens mature, the corolla and calyx open to reveal the stamens and pistils. This process is called flowering.

After the flower opens, the anthers of the stamens burst and the pollen is released and falls on the stigma of the pistil. This process is called pollination.

Self-pollination: Pollen grains produced by the stamens of a flower land on the stigmas of the pistils of the same flower.

Cross-pollination: Pollen produced by the stamens of one flower falls on the stigma of the pistils of another flower through external force.

Flowering and fruiting of plants PPT, part 2: discussion

Not all pollen can land on the stigmas of the same flower, and not all stigmas can get pollen from the same plant. If the pistils are not fertilized by pollen during flowering, the plant will gain nothing from its efforts to bloom.

Discuss the following issues based on actual conditions:

1. Corn ears often have missing kernels, and sunflower kernels often have hollow kernels. What is the reason? How to make up for the lack of pollination in nature?
