Eichhornia crassipes (commonly known as water hyacinth) is native to South America. In 1884, it was brought to a horticultural exposition in the United States as an ornamental plant and was predicted to be "the lilac corolla that beautifies the world." Introduced to China in 1901, Eichhornia crassipes has strong vitality and reproduces rapidly. It has become a serious invasive plant in China.

Dangers of Eichhornia crassipes

Because water hyacinth has extremely strong reproductive capacity, it can cause serious ecological disasters. Water hyacinth blocks sunlight, causing underwater plants to not get enough light and die. At the same time, ships of any size cannot come and go freely in the territory of water hyacinth. Not only that, after Eichhornia crassipes dies, its decaying body sinks to the bottom of the water to form a layer with a high content of heavy metals, directly killing benthic organisms.
