Threats to biodiversity

1. Acceleration of species extinction

Extinct wild animals in my country include rhinos, wild horses, saiga antelopes and Xinjiang tigers. There are still many animals that have become extinct and have not been discovered or identified.

2. Reduction in genetic diversity: The number of wild types of many species has been severely reduced and is on the verge of extinction. Some only have captive or cultivated types left, with severe inbreeding.

Causes of biodiversity loss

1. Destruction of ecosystem diversity: Many river bays, lakes and wetlands have been transformed into farmland. Forest reserves have plummeted, grasslands have been degraded, and desertification has become serious...

2. Habitat loss and fragmentation: The tropical rainforest, home to 50% of the world’s species, has been reduced by half its original area.

3. Predatory over-exploitation: The number of antelopes, wild deer, precious fur animals, and various fish species in our country has been greatly reduced.

Ways to protect biodiversity

1. In situ protection (fundamental approach)

⑴The most effective way to protect in situ is to establish nature reserves. my country has established more than 3,000 nature reserves, 16 of which have been added to the "World Biosphere Reserve Network".

⑵The purpose of establishing a nature reserve: (main function)

Protect concentrated distribution areas of rare and endangered animals and plants, and protect representative natural ecosystems.

2. Ex-situ conservation: species whose survival and reproduction are seriously threatened are moved out of their original places and moved to zoos, botanical gardens, aquariums and endangered animal breeding centers for special protection and management.

3. Strengthen education and legal management: Improve citizens’ awareness of environmental protection by studying laws such as the Forest Law of the People’s Republic of China and the Wildlife Protection Law of the People’s Republic of China.
