[Wu Jingzi] (1701-1754), also known as Minxuan and Wenmu, was one of the greatest novelists of the Qing Dynasty. Because his family had a "Wenmu Shanfang", he called himself "Wenmu Old Man" in his later years. You Jing's "Selected Works" was completed. If one is not good at managing life and has a heroic nature, he will squander all his old products within a few years, and sometimes he may run out of food.

Wu Jingzi's personal experience made him feel particularly deeply about the pros and cons of taking the Eight-part Part (Bagu) test and holding the imperial examination. In terms of the background of the times, during the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong dynasties of the Qing Dynasty, China had already seen the beginning of capitalist production relations. The superficial prosperity of society could not cover up the decay of feudal society. While suppressing the armed uprising, the rulers established literary prisons and used methods such as testing eight-part essays, holding imperial examinations, and advocating Neo-Confucianism to control thought and imprison scholars.

Wu Jingzi opposed the eight-part essay and the imperial examination system, and detested the custom of scholars who were obsessed with crafts and eager for fame and fortune. He reflected these views in "The Scholars" and used satirical techniques to profoundly expose ugly things.

In the title of the book, the word "Rulin" comes from the "Biographies of Scholars" in "Historical Records". It is the "forest of Confucian scholars", which refers to the academic world and so on. Biography of national history is naturally "official history", and the author specifically uses "foreign history" as the title of the book just to make a distinction.

Moreover, the author deliberately pretends that the story in the book takes place in the Ming Dynasty to resemble "official history", but in fact it depicts a wide range of social life in the Qing Dynasty, reflecting the bad luck of the author's contemporaries who were poisoned by the imperial examination system.

The children of aristocratic families cannot find their old father's filial son; the scholar who cheats and drinks food, the wanderer who deceives and kidnaps. People of all kinds and from all walks of life walk around the world, with sarcasm, tears, chills and warmth.

"The Scholars" uses precise descriptions to describe "common", "open" and "unsurprising" contradictions and disharmony in human affairs, showing its hidden meaning. For example, the Tang magistrate invited Fan Jin, who was in mourning, to have a meal. Fan Jin first "stepped back" and refused to use silver to set the cups and chopsticks. Tang Zhixian hurriedly asked for a pair of porcelain cups and a pair of elephant chopsticks, but he still refused. Until he got a pair of white bamboo chopsticks, "that's all."
