Liu Tianhua is a famous Chinese composer, folk instrumentalist and music educator. Born in Jiangyin County, Jiangsu Province. In 1922, he was hired to go to Beijing and teach at the Music Transmission Institute of Peking University. From 1926, he taught in the Music Department of Beijing Art College and the Music Department of Peking University Women's College of Arts and Sciences until his death. In June 1932, while going to Tianqiao to collect gong and drum music, he contracted scarlet fever and died. The main works include: "Birds in the Empty Mountain", "Bright Journey", "Good Night", etc.

Introduction to "Birds on the Empty Mountain"

"Birds on the Empty Mountain" is an erhu solo piece composed by Liu Tianhua. The first draft was written in 1918 and was finalized ten years later. The title is taken from a poem by Wang Wei of the Tang Dynasty: "There are no people in the empty mountain, but you can hear people's voices." In this piece, Liu Tianhua creatively used the three-stringed opera-style imitation technique to depict the beautiful artistic conception of deep mountains and deep valleys, with hundreds of birds singing. It is a very vivid work. In 1993, he won the "Chinese 20th Century Music Classic Award" from the Chinese National Culture Promotion Association.

Music Appreciation

The whole song has five sections, including an introduction and an ending. The introduction slowly jumps into the large intervals of octaves, fifths, and fourths with decorative sounds, just like the echo in the empty valley, depicting a vague and quiet artistic conception, which is fascinating. The music in the first and second sections is fresh and lively, and the atmosphere is lively.
