India PPT, Part 2: The most populous country in the future
India's population is growing at a rate of 20 million per year. According to the United Nations Food Organization, by 2040, India will surpass China and become the world's most populous country.
Impact of population growth
The reduction in per capita arable land due to population growth has threatened India's food security. In 1960, India's per capita cultivated land was 0.21 hectares. By 1999, the per capita cultivated land had dropped to 0.10 hectares, a reduction of more than half. It is estimated that by 2050, per capita cultivated land will be only 0.07 hectares. In the 45 years from 1951 to 1996, India's cereal production tripled, but as the increase in grain production was offset by the growth of a large population, per capita cereal growth was only 35%. Not long ago, experts from the International Food Policy Research Institute predicted that India's grain production will reach saturation by 2020, and the grain shortage will reach 36 million to 142 million tons.
