1. The body structure of ants

The body of an ant is divided into three parts: head, thorax and abdomen. The head has a pair of antennae and the thorax has three pairs of legs.

2. Ant colony structure and division of labor

All Formicidae live in social groups. Generally there are four different types of ants in a colony:

Queen Ant - The leader of the colony, responsible for the reproduction of offspring.

Male ants - Responsible for mating with the queen and then dying.

Soldier ants - responsible for fighting.

Worker ants - responsible for finding food and building ant nests.

Queen ant: A reproductive female, or mother ant, also known as the ant king. She is the largest in the group, especially with a large abdomen, well-developed reproductive organs, short antennae, small thorax, wings, wingless or wingless. The main responsibility is to lay eggs, reproduce offspring and manage the group family. Usually the ants we see carrying things are worker ants, while the female ants stay deep in the nest. Unless there is great danger in the nest or they are migrating, they do not show up.

Male ant: or father ant. The head is round and small, the upper jaw is underdeveloped, and the antennae are slender. They have well-developed reproductive organs and external genitalia, and their main function is to mate with the queen. Then they give birth to young ants. After mating, the female ants lay eggs alone to establish a colony, while the male ants leave the colony and die.

Worker ants: also called professional ants. The wingless, rudimentary female is generally the smallest individual in the group, but the most numerous. The compound eyes are small and the single eye is very small or absent. The upper jaw, antennae and three pairs of thorax are well developed, and it is good at walking. Worker ants are unable to reproduce. The main duties of worker ants are to build and expand nests, collect food, feed larvae and queens, etc.

Soldier ants: "Soldier ants" are the common name for the large workers of certain ant species, which are female ants that are sterile. The head is large and the upper jaw is well developed, which can crush hard food and become a fighting weapon when defending the group.
