"Shoton Festival" is a traditional festival of the Tibetan people. In Tibetan, Shoton Festival means "yogurt drinking festival". It is usually held in early July of the Tibetan calendar and lasts for 3-5 days. During the festival, Tibetan people watch Tibetan operas and hold garden activities, playing, singing, dancing, and racing cattle, and have fun.

When the time comes for the competition, the fat and strong yaks, led by their owners, enter the arena in high spirits. The yaks have flowers tied with red ribbons on their horns, and brand new cushions on their bodies. Their long hair has been carefully combed by their owners, and they are clean all over. The yak owners are dressed in festive costumes, and they all look like warriors about to go on a battle.
