Writing background and author introduction of this article

writing background

"The Drunkard's Pavilion" was written in the sixth year of Qingli reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty (AD 1046), when Ouyang Xiu was appointed as the prefect of Chuzhou. Ouyang Xiu came to Chuzhou after being demoted in the fifth year of Qingli. Before being demoted, he served as Taichang Prime Minister's Admonition Court, You Zhengyan's Zhi Gao, and Hebei Capital Transport Envoy. The reason for being demoted was that he always supported Han Qi, Fan Zhongyan, Fu Bi and others in implementing the New Deal, while opposing the conservative Lu Yijian, Xia Song and others. Han Fan and others had already been demoted one after another before January of the fifth year of Qingli. By August of that year, Ouyang Xiu was accused of having a relative commit a crime and was involved in the matter. He was dismissed from the court and demoted. Release Chuzhou.

Ouyang Xiu implemented lenient and simple politics in Chuzhou and developed production, which enabled the locals to live a peaceful and stable life, with abundant crops and an intoxicating landscape. This made Ouyang Xiu feel extremely happy. But at that time, the entire Northern Song Dynasty was politically dark and evil, and some people who were aspiring to reform and strengthen themselves were hit hard. He watched helplessly as the country's long-standing shortcomings could not be eliminated and the scene of decline grew day by day. This made him feel heavy. Worry and pain. This was his mood when he wrote "The Drunkard's Pavilion". These two aspects are blended together and reflected in his works.

about the author

Ouyang Xiu (1007-1072), courtesy name Yongshu, nicknamed himself Drunken Old Man, and in his later years was also known as Liuyi Jushi. His posthumous title was Wenzhong, and he was known as Ouyang Wenzhonggong in the world. He was a politician, writer, historian and poet in the Northern Song Dynasty. Together with Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan of the Tang Dynasty and Wang Anshi, Su Xun, Su Shi, Su Che and Zeng Gong of the Song Dynasty, they are collectively known as the "Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties". This article was written when the author was demoted to Chuzhou. Although he was demoted, he could still be a local official and do things for the people with a positive and optimistic attitude.

Ouyang Xiu was born in Yongfeng, Jiangxi. He lost his father when he was 4 years old and his family was poor. His mother, Zheng, taught him how to read and write by using Di pole paintings. He was able to write poems at the age of 10. He became a Jinshi at the age of 21. He later served as a supervisory censor. He was reprimanded because of his sympathy for Fan Zhongyan, so he wrote a letter to express his regret. Gao Ruona was demoted to Yiling (now Yichang, Hubei). Later, he returned to the court and served as Prince Zhongyun and Longtuge's direct bachelor. Later, he was demoted to Chuzhou and transferred to Yangzhou. After returning to the dynasty, he became a deputy envoy to the privy council and participated in political affairs. His posthumous title is Wenzhong.
