Difficult points

The difference between have been to and have gone to

(1) Tom has been to the Great Wall twice. He went there in 2006 and in 2008.

(2) Jim has gone to the Great Wall. He will be back in three days.

Have been to means someone has been to a certain place and someone has come back now

Have gone to means that someone has gone to a certain place. This person is now somewhere or on the way to a certain place and has not come back.
