RevisionPPT, the third part: grammar training

(1) Possessive case of nouns

The possessive form of a noun indicates the belonging relationship of a person or thing, meaning "of...". There are two forms of possessive nouns: 's and of.

Test point 1: possessive form of 's

's possessive case is often used to express the ownership relationship between a living noun and the noun that follows it. Possessive nouns, like adjective possessive pronouns, mean everything. 's can also be used for some inanimate things.

Mary's skirt is the same as her ________.

Test point 2: of possessive form

A noun often used for inanimate things, sometimes also used for animate things.

eg: It is a picture of my family.

It's a picture of my family.

Double possessive - of+'s or of+ nominal possessive pronoun.

eg: a car of his uncle's A car of his uncle's

a friend of mine a friend of mine

(2) Adverbial clauses of time introduced by when

Adverbial clauses are usually introduced by a conjunction or by a phrase that functions as a conjunction. Adverbial clauses play the role of adverbials in sentences. Some adverbial clauses can come before the main clause (after which they are often separated from the main clause by a comma), and some adverbial clauses can come after the main clause (when they are preceded by a comma and are not separated from the main clause).

The time adverbial clause introduced by when can be placed before or after the main clause. When the subordinate clause comes first, the main clauses are usually separated by commas.

eg: I will go to London when I am free.

＝When I am free, I will go to London.

When I have free time, I go to London.

Test point 1: When clauses are introduced, the simple present tense is commonly used to express the future.

When the main clause is in the future tense, the subordinate clause expresses the future in the present tense.

eg: I will tell him when he comes back.

I'll tell him when he comes back.

Betty will ring me up when she ________ in Shanghai.

A. arrive B. arrive C. arrived D. will arrive

When the main clause is an imperative sentence, the subordinate clause uses the present tense to express the future.

eg: Please call me when you come back.

When you come back, please call me.

Give the book to Lucy when ________her!

When the main clause contains a modal verb (can, may, must, etc.), the subordinate clause uses the present tense to express the future.

eg: I can help you learn English when I am free.

When I am free, I will help you learn English.
