Unit Grammar Focus PPT, Part 2: Grammar Exploration

(1) Usage of simple future tense

The simple future tense expresses an action or state of existence that will occur at a certain time in the future, or a regular action or state within a certain period of time in the future; it also expresses an intention, plan or preparation to do something, and is often used with tomorrow, next week, soon, etc. Used with adverbials to express future time. Generally, there are two expression structures for the future tense: "be going to + original form of verb" and "will + original form of verb". like:

Li Ming is going to learn English next year.

Li Ming plans to learn English next year.

They will go to Shanghai for their holiday.

They are going to Shanghai for vacation.

(2) Sentence structure

1. Affirmative form

(1) Subject + be (am/is/are) going to + do (original form of verb) + others. (The verb to be changes with the change of the subject) For example:

I'm going to play basketball tomorrow. I'm going to play basketball tomorrow.

(2) Subject + will/shall + do (original form of verb) + others. Shall is only used in the first person. like:

They will go shopping this afternoon. They will go shopping this afternoon.

I shall go there tomorrow. I will go there tomorrow.

2. Negative form

(1) Subject + be (am/is/are) + not + going to + do (original form of verb) + others. For example:

We aren't going to play basketball after class.

We are not going to play basketball after class.

(2) Subject + will/shall + not + do (original form of verb) + others. (will not is often abbreviated as won't) such as:

I will not(won't) go shopping next Sunday.

I won't go shopping next Sunday.

3. General question form

(1) Be (Am/Is/Are) + subject + going to + do (original form of verb) + others? like:

Are you going to buy a new coat this winter?

Are you planning to buy a new coat this winter?

(2) Shall/Will + subject + do (original form of verb) + others? like:

Will you play football after school?

Are you going to play football after school?
