Attributive clause (II) - usage of relative adverbs
[Point 1] Overview
When the relative word that introduces the attributive clause is used as an adverbial of time, place, or reason in the clause, a relative adverb should be used.

(1) Refers to the antecedent indicating time, place, and reason;
(2) Serving as a sentence element in a clause - an adverbial;
(3) Play a connecting role, connecting the main clause and the attributive clause.

(1) When introduces attributive clauses
When represents time, it replaces the antecedent and serves as a time adverbial in an attributive clause. Its antecedent is often a noun expressing time, such as time, day, week, year, etc.
【Misunderstanding Warning】
(1) When the antecedent is a time noun, the attributive clause can be introduced with when, that or which. The key depends on what kind of component the relative word is in the clause.
(2) If the relative word serves as an adverbial in the attributive clause, use when to introduce it; if the relative word serves as the subject or object in the attributive clause, use that or which to introduce.
(2) Attributive clause introduced by where
where represents place, replaces the antecedent and serves as a place adverbial in an attributive clause. Its antecedent is often a noun indicating a place, such as place, factory, house, village, etc., or a noun indicating an abstract location, such as position, point, case, stage, situation, atmosphere, etc.
