Grammar

Pronouns are words used to replace nouns. It is an important item in the English grammatical structure and one of the key contents of the high school entrance examination. Looking at the mid-term exam questions over the years, indefinite pronouns appear most frequently, followed by IT usage, interrogative pronouns, reflexive pronouns and personal pronouns.

Personal Pronouns

Nominative: I, you, she, he, it, we, you, they

Accusative case: me, you, her, him, it, us, you, them

Demonstrative

this, these, that, those

possessive pronoun

Adjective part: my, your, her, his, its, our, your, their

Noun: mine, yours, hers, his, its, ours, yours, theirs

reflexive pronoun

myself, yourself, herself, himself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves

Interrogative pronouns

what, which, who, whom, whose

indefinite pronoun

some, any, both, either, neither, all, none, each, every, many, much, few, a few, little, a little, other, another, one, nobody, somebody, anybody, everyone, everything, something, anything, nothing

1) some and any

a. Whether some and any are singular or plural depends on what they replace. Both some and any can refer to people or things, and can represent countable things and people, as well as uncountable concepts. For example: some (any) books, some (any) money, some people, some water

b. As pronouns, they can serve as subjects and objects in sentences. For example:

There are many people in the park. Some are dancing; others are playing Taijiquan.

c. Some is used in affirmative sentences, while any is used in questions, negative sentences and conditional sentences.

—I am thirsty. Can you give me some water?

—Sorry, I don’t have any. If I have any, I will give you some.

2) none and neither

a. None and neither mean negation. The difference between the two is that neither is used for both, while none is used for more than two. For example: Yes, I saw two boys at the door, but neither (of them) is my brother. None (of the students) in my class wants to take part in this trip.

b. In addition to countable people and things, none can also refer to uncountable things, and can refer to the same numerical concepts as one, two, and three. For example:

I have a lot of money in my bag, but none is mine.

—How many postcards have you sent?

—None.

3) (a) little and (a) few

a. A little and a few express positive concepts, while little and few express negative concepts.

b. (a) little is used for uncountable nouns, and (a) few is used for countable nouns. For example:

—Do you have any water?

—Yes, but only a little.

—Sorry, I have little myself. I can’t give you any.
