"Language in use" Great books PPT courseware

Goals

1. To practice using passive voice.

2. To use the key words and expressions in new situations.

Revision

Talk something about the pictures.

One of my favorite great books is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. The story is set in the town of St Petersburg, Missouri, in the US, in the nineteenth century.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book. It is more than an adventure story. Mark Twain wrote it in 1876.

Language practice

1. Their works are still read by many people today.

2. We’re still influenced by Confucius’s ideas.

3. It is still read and loved by people all over the world.

Work in pairs

Compare the sentences below with the sentences in the grammar box above.

1. Many people still read their works today.

2. Confucius’s ideas still influence us.

3. People all over the world still read and love it.

Grammar

passive voice(1)

If we want to express "The children love this book" or "We use computers every day", we would say:

Children love this book.

We use computers every day.

If you want to say "this book is loved by children" and "computers are used every day", you can express it like this:

This book is loved by children.

Computers are used (by us) every day.

The emphases expressed by these two sets of sentences are different. The first group of sentences focuses on the sender of the action, emphasizing what someone did, while the second group of sentences focuses on the recipient of the action, emphasizing how something/something is. Therefore, when we want to highlight the performer of an action, we should use the active voice (the first set of sentences) to express it, and when we want to emphasize the recipient of the action, we should use the passive voice (the second set of sentences). Express.

The various sentence patterns of the simple present tense passive voice are summarized as follows:

1. Affirmative sentence: subject+am/is/are+verb past participle (+by+action performer)

2. Negative sentence: subject + am / is / are not + past participle of verb (+ by + action executor)

3. General questions: Am / Is / Are + subject + past participle of verb (+ by + action executor)

4. Special interrogative sentences: special interrogative words + am / is /are + subject + past participle of verb (+ by + action executor)

e.g. This song is still loved by many young people today.

This song is still loved by many young people. (Affirmative)

This camera is not made in Japan.

This camera is not made in Japan. (Negative Sentences)

Now complete the sentences with the correct form of the words in the box. You need to use the words more than once.
