The formation of affirmative, negative and general interrogative forms of the simple past tense

Affirmative:

Subject + past tense of verb + …

We heard a sound.

Negative:

Subject + did + not + verb base + …

We did not / didn’t hear a sound.

General questions:

Did + subject + verb base form + …?

Did you hear a sound?

Yes, we did. / No, we didn’t.

"Outdoor fun" PPT, part 5: How to remember the past tense of verbs

The past tense of the verb indicates that something happened in the past;

Be is changed to had by was or were, have, has;

The past tense of the predicate verb marks the past time;

For general verbs, add -ed. If the verb is special, you have to memorize it by heart.

The negative sentence is very simple, there isn’t anything added after the subject;

Questions are not difficult either, did is placed before the subject;

There is did before the predicate, and the predicate verb needs to be restored;

If the verb is was or were, add not to the negation.
