Planet DannyPPT, Part 4: Adverbial Clauses

1. Conditional adverbial clause

When a sentence is used as an adverbial in a compound sentence, it is called an adverbial clause. When a clause expresses the meaning of "if...", it is called a conditional adverbial clause, and we usually use the conjunctions if and unless to introduce it.

The conditional adverbial clause introduced by if can be placed before the main clause, but the main clauses are often separated by commas. The conditional adverbial clause introduced by if can also be placed after the main clause, and there is no need to separate the main clauses with commas.

e.g. If he wants to go, please tell me.

Don’t cross the road if the traffic light is red.

Unless is a conjunction, meaning "unless; if not", it can also guide conditional adverbial clauses with negative meaning, equivalent to if...not.

[Note] When unless introduces a conditional adverbial clause, if the main clause is in the simple future tense, the subordinate clause uses the present simple tense to express the future.

e.g. We’ll go to the concert unless it doesn’t rain.

2. Adverbial clause of concession

The adverbial clause of concession is introduced by the following subordinating conjunction:

though (although), although (although), as (despite), even if (even if), even though (even though), no matter... (no matter), etc.

e.g. Although it rained a lot, we enjoyed our holiday.

The house isn’t very nice. I like the garden though.

Even though I was really tired, I couldn’t sleep.

I’ll visit him this evening even if I can stay only a few minutes.

Planet DannyPPT, Part 5: Language Points

1. Danny turns the telescope around and looks through it again.

Danny turned the telescope around and looked through it again.

turn around / round means "to turn around; to turn around"

e.g. I turned around / round and saw the boy climbing up the tree.

I turned around and saw the boy climbing up the tree.

Why did they turn their desks around?

Why did they put the desk upside down?

2. I don’t think you can find one unless you have a bigger telescope.

I don't think you can find (the stars) unless you have a bigger telescope.

Unless is a conjunction, meaning "unless, if not".

The conditional adverbial clause introduced by unless can be either a real condition or an unreal condition.

As a true conditional clause, unless is usually equivalent to if...not.

e.g. We won’t be able to reach the top of the mountain unless the weather changes(= if the weather doesn’t change).

If the weather doesn't change, we won't be able to reach the top of the mountain.
