Part One: Introduction to the author and background
Du Mu (803-852), courtesy name Muzhi, was born in Jingzhao Wannian (now Xi'an, Shaanxi). From the first year of Baoli by Jingzong of the Tang Dynasty to the fourth year of Emperor Ai Tianyou (825-907), a total of eighty-three years, the literary history is generally called the late Tang period. During this period, the eunuchs were in power, cronies were fighting, the Tang Empire was declining day by day, the rivers were declining, and the power of vassal towns was becoming stronger and stronger. Only twenty-two years after Du Mu's death, the peasant uprising led by Huang Chao broke out. The poet Du Mu lived in such a precarious late Tang period. He is the grandson of Prime Minister Du You. He was promoted to Jinshi at the age of twenty-six, but because of his upright nature, he was ostracized and worked as a staff member in Jiangxi and other places for ten years. At the age of thirty-six, he moved inland and became an official in the capital. Later, he was squeezed out by Prime Minister Li Deyu and demoted to the position of assassin in Huangzhou, Chizhou and other places. In the poetry circle of the late Tang Dynasty, he and Li Shangyin were collectively known as "Later Li Du" and known as "Xiao Du". Many of his poems expressed emotion about current events and expressed temperament, with a handsome and majestic style.
Red Cliff PPT, part 2: Introduction to the poem title
chibi
Chibi, place name, is the place where Zhou Yu defeated Cao Cao in the 13th year of Emperor Xian of the Eastern Han Dynasty (208). It is now on the south bank of the Yangtze River northwest of Chibi, Hubei Province. This poem was written by the author after passing the famous ancient battlefield of Chibi and feeling the success and failure of the heroes in the Three Kingdoms era. The poem is titled after a place, but it is actually a nostalgic tribute to history.
The Battle of Chibi, which took place in October of the 13th year of Jian'an (208 AD) of Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty, was a major battle that played a decisive role in the historical situation of the three kingdoms. As a result, the combined forces of Sun and Liu defeated Cao's army, and the thirty-four-year-old commander of Sun Wu's army, Zhou Yu, was the most influential figure in this battle.

Explanation of word meaning
Broken Halberd: refers to a broken weapon. Break, break. Halberd, an ancient weapon.
Pin: Rusted.
General: handle, take.
Previous dynasty: the previous era.
East wind: spring breeze. Zhou Lang: Zhou Yu, the general of Wu State.
Tongque: that is, Tongque Terrace.
Er Qiao: Duke Qiao’s two daughters, Da Qiao is married to Sun Ce, and Xiao Qiao is married to Zhou Yu.
Refer to the annotations and use reference books to clarify the poems and understand the poetic meaning.
A broken iron halberd sank in the sand at the bottom of the water but had not been eaten away. After polishing and washing it, I found that it was a relic from the Battle of Chibi. At that time, if the strong east wind had not helped Zhou Yu launch a fire attack and defeated Cao Jun, the beauties of Soochow, Da Qiao and Xiao Qiao, would have been kidnapped and imprisoned on the Tongque Platform for Cao Cao to occupy.
Red Cliff PPT, Part 5: Poetry Appreciation
1. "The iron that has been broken and fallen into the sand has not been sold, but it will be wiped out and the past will be recognized":
The broken halberd sank in the mud and was not corroded. After polishing it, it was obvious that it was a relic from the time when the Eastern Wu Dynasty defeated Cao Cao. The poet found a broken sword in the mud on the riverside. After polishing it, he identified it as a relic from the Three Kingdoms period. These two sentences seem to be plain narratives, but the poet shows injustice from the plain narrative, laying the foundation for later expressing the "nostalgic feelings".
2. "The east wind refuses to cooperate with Zhou Lang, and the copper bird spring locks Erqiao deeply":
Compared with the first two sentences, these two sentences are discussions. This means that if Dongfeng did not help Zhou Yu back then, Er Qiao would have been deeply locked up by the bronze bird platform, and Jiangdong Er Qiao would have become Cao Gong's concubine. This refers to Zhou Yu's lucky victory over Cao Cao in the Battle of Chibi. For Cao Cao, he was also ambitious. His song "Singing over wine, what's life like? It's like the morning dew, there will be more hardship in the days to come."
Red Cliff PPT, Part Six: Analysis of Poetry
Where does the poet's evaluation of history come from?
The broken halberd in the sinking sand.
How did the poet evaluate the Battle of Red Cliff?
Don't judge heroes by success or failure. It is believed that the victory in the Battle of Chibi was just with the help of the east wind, and there was a lot of chance, otherwise there would be the opposite result.
What does "Er Qiao" refer to in the poem? What's the point of writing this way?
"Er Qiao" vividly represents the fate of Soochow. The poet assumed that Soochow was defeated. He did not write about the broken mountains and rivers and the loss of life, but wrote about Er Qiao entering the Wei Dynasty to serve as an envoy. Although it is a historical theory, it is given a specific image, which shows the genius of the poet's creation.
What is the difference in expression between the two sentences before and after? What's the internal connection?
The first two sentences are narrative, and the last two sentences are argumentative. Narrative sparks discussion.
What kind of thoughts and feelings do the author express in the last two most exciting lines of the poem?
The last two sentences tortuously reflect his depression, injustice and generous mind. The poet lamented that the opportunity for heroes in history to become famous was because he was not born at the right time and had no talent but was unable to use it. There is another meaning: as long as there is an opportunity, I believe that I will always make a difference, showing a compelling heroic spirit.
Chibi PPT, part 7: after-school development
1. What scene will appear in front of you?
(smoke of war)
2. What characters will appear in front of you? What do they look like?
(Cao Cao: If he wins, he will fly across the Yangtze River and compose poems. He will sing and dance gracefully on the bronze sparrow, hiding the lingering love and triumphant pride. The two Qiaos are more beautiful than the others, looking forward to their love. The leader of Soochow: The conductor is calm and elegant. )
3. Who else did you see?
(Du Mu’s character: He was a talented man who managed the country and helped the world. He was proficient in politics and military affairs. He was proud of his knowledge of military affairs and often boasted of his military strategy. The discussion of Zhou Yu’s lucky success in the poem was an expression of his military pride. He was greatly praised by Ruan Ji. "There are no heroes, so Zhuzi became famous.")
Chibi PPT, Part 8: Summary
The poet was inspired by the object and chanted the history, pointing out that the Battle of Chibi was related to the survival of the country and the safety of the country. At the same time, the story of Zhou Yu and Cao Cao was used to express the poet's depression and injustice that "there is no place for heroes to use their skills".
