About the Author
Ah Le, whose real name is Zhu Fan, was originally named Zhu Yiwei. He was born in January 1909 in Lianshui, Jiangsu Province. He studied at the High School Affiliated to Nanjing Jinling University, Shanghai Lida Academy and Tongwen Academy, and graduated from Shanghai University of the Arts. In 1931, he joined the Anti-Imperialist Alliance. In 1932, he joined the "Left-Wing Drama Federation". In August of the same year, he joined the Shanghai British Bus Company as a conductor and soon joined the Communist Party of China. In 1933, he was arrested and sentenced for participating in a workers' strike. He was released on bail in 1935 and went to Malaysia to participate in the activities of the Communist Party of Malaysia. He was discovered by the authorities and was forced to leave the country. He returned to Shanghai in 1936 and engaged in writing and translation. In 1937, when the Anti-Japanese War began, he joined the New Fourth Army. Since then, he has been doing cultural, educational and administrative work in the army and local areas. After liberation, he successively served as vice president of Hunan Revolutionary University, director of the Provincial Department of Culture and Education, director of Propaganda of the Provincial Party Committee, and president of Hunan University. Retired in 1983.
