First aid principles

Respiratory system:

If a person stops breathing for five minutes, the person's brain will die from lack of oxygen. In the case of respiratory death, the amount of oxygen retained in the lungs when breathing stops determines how long the heart stops. Under normal circumstances, for people with normal lungs, after breathing stops, the oxygen stored in the lung blood and tissue fluid can be maintained for about 4 minutes. After that, due to severe hypoxia in the body, the heartbeat also stops.

Circulatory system:

For every minute that help is delayed to restore a heartbeat, the patient's chance of recovery decreases by 7% to 10%. The heart stops for 4 minutes. Any effort will be in vain. If a person loses one-third of his blood, this will seriously affect the efficiency of the circulatory system in delivering oxygen. He may die as well.

Bleeding:

2. Check breathing

Normal breathing is 16-20 times per minute. The breathing of critically ill patients often becomes faster, shallower and irregular. As the patient approaches death, breathing becomes slow, irregular, and stops breathing.

When observing the breathing of critically ill patients, it is difficult to see the obvious rise and fall of the chest due to weak breathing. You can use a small piece of cotton, a small strip of paper, grass, etc. and place it next to the person's nostrils to see if these objects float back and forth with the breathing. Determine whether you are still breathing.

Method steps:

1. Make the patient lie on his back with his head tilted back to prevent the base of the tongue from falling backwards and blocking the throat and affecting breathing. Uncover the patient's collar and loosen his belt.

2. Remove foreign matter and dirt from the patient's mouth and nose, and keep the patient's respiratory tract open.

3. The rescuer takes a deep breath and blows into the patient's mouth. Pay attention to pinching the patient's nose when blowing to prevent the blown air from escaping from the nostrils and entering the lungs. If you see the patient's chest and abdomen rising and falling when you blow air, it proves that the lungs have been ventilated. The blowing should be continued, 15-20 times per minute, until the patient resumes spontaneous breathing. If the patient vomits after regaining breathing, the vomitus must be prevented from entering the trachea.
