1. Literary masterpieces

1. What famous works of European and American literature in the 20th century are introduced in the text?

2. What is the reason for the tragedy of the protagonist Clyde in the novel "An American Tragedy"?

In the 1920s when the novel came out, American society advocated hypocritical extravagant talk and did not properly educate the young generation. American materialism makes young people think that with money, they can possess everything, including beauty. As a result, the vanity and egoism of pursuing wealth and enjoyment developed viciously, and Clyde finally embarked on the road of self-destruction. What is described in the novel is not only the tragedy of Clyde, but also the tragedy of America.

Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) was a famous American realist writer in the 20th century. Born in Indiana to a poor immigrant family. Before graduating from high school, he started to make a living on his own at the age of 12. In 1912, he published the novel "The Financier", which together with "Giant" (1914) and "Stoic" (1947) is called the "Trilogy of Desire", which profoundly exposed the sins of the American bourgeoisie's plundering. In 1925, the novel "An American Tragedy" was published, making the author the most famous writer in the United States. This novel is Dreiser's best work. The novel describes an ordinary American young man who, under the influence of corrupt social trends, pursues a "higher" life and degenerates into a murderer. In his lifetime, he created a total of eight novels, four collections of short stories, two collections of dramas and poems, and seven collections of features, essays, and political commentaries, leaving a huge and precious literary legacy. In 1941, he was elected president of the Writers Guild of America, and in 1944 he received the Honorary Award from the American Academy of Letters and Arts.

2. Modern Art

1. Picasso said: "The artist is also a political figure. He will often be concerned about the joys and sorrows of the disaster and respond from all aspects. How can he not care about others, how can he make himself the same as others with an indifferent attitude of escaping reality? How about isolating your rich life? No, painting is not created to decorate a house, it is a weapon to resist and attack the enemy." Please answer the following questions accordingly:

A. Which of his works best embodies these ideas? "Guernica"

B. What scene does this painting depict?

Guernica: On the far right, a woman holds her hands up, having apparently fallen from a burning house. Another woman runs towards the center of the painting, fear and rage spreading all over her body; there is a mother on the left, holding a baby who was killed by the explosion in her hands, crying and howling. In the right corner, a woman's head pokes out of the window. She holds an oil lamp and raises it straight forward, symbolizing revelation. She displays it all under the light so that the world can see clearly. In the center of the picture, there is a light like an eye high up, but the pupil of the eye is like a light cannon. The mutilated limbs of the soldiers lay on the ground. The broken arm still held the broken sword. There is a flower next to the sword, which may be a tribute to the hero. Near the center, there was a horse's head that was neighing due to injury. Its mouth was open and it was frightened by the explosion. Several arrows fell from above, piercing the bodies of animals and people struggling in pain. On the upper left side, there is a bull head with displaced eyes, which looks very ferocious.
