Lenin and the October Revolution PPT, Part 2: Russia before the October Revolution

After the serfdom reform in 1861, Russian capitalism developed. But compared with the major capitalist countries in Western Europe and North America, Russia is still very backward. In the First World War, Russia suffered successive defeats, various domestic social conflicts intensified, and voices opposing the war and demanding social change became increasingly louder.

Relevant historical events

In March 1917, 300,000 people held anti-war strikes and demonstrations in Petrograd, the Russian capital. The demonstrations developed into an armed uprising, supported by soldiers. The February Revolution quickly spread across the country, and Soviets were established in various places. The Petrograd Soviet of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies became the leading center of the national revolution. Tsar Nicholas II, who was on the front line, was forced to abdicate, and the bourgeois provisional government took control of the country.

Think about it: After the February Revolution, why did the rule of the bourgeois provisional government arouse greater dissatisfaction among the people?

The provisional government did not meet the people's demands for peace, land and bread. Instead, it announced that it would continue to fulfill the "obligations" of the tsarist government and carry out the world war to the end, causing greater dissatisfaction among the people.

Lenin and the October Revolution PPT, Part 3: October Revolution

Discuss: What was the direct cause of the outbreak of the October Revolution?

1. In July 1917, the provisional government ordered the Russian troops on the front line to launch a massive offensive, which resulted in a disastrous defeat. In the autumn of this year, famine struck again, and residents of the capital could only receive about 110 grams of bread per day. The Russian economy was on the verge of total collapse, and the annual debt interest payments were almost equal to the pre-war state budget. The provisional government's rule fell into a comprehensive crisis.

2. After analyzing these situations, Lenin pointed out that the country was in the predicament of "impending catastrophe", "armed uprising is inevitable and is fully mature", and the Bolsheviks must seize power through armed uprising.

Lenin and the October Revolution PPT, Part 4: Opening up a new era

1. The Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets of Workers’ and Soldiers’ Deputies

On the evening of November 7, 1917, the Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets of Workers’ and Soldiers’ Deputies officially opened at Smolny Palace.

Conference content

① The congress declared that all political power in various places would be transferred to the Soviets of Workers’, Soldiers’ and Peasants’ Deputies. Soviet power was immediately established throughout the country.

② The congress passed the "Peace Decree", recommending that all belligerents participating in World War I immediately negotiate for peace and conclude a peace treaty without ceding territory or paying indemnities.

③The congress announced the establishment of a Soviet government. The new government was composed of the Bolshevik Party, with Lenin as Chairman of the People's Committee.

2. Consolidate the new political power

(1) The Bolshevik Party abolished the old state machinery and created new government agencies;

(2) Abolish the old standing army and establish the Red Army;

(3) Nationalize large industries, railways and banks and establish socialist public ownership;

(4) Abolish private ownership of land, confiscate land from landlords, royal families and monasteries, and distribute it to peasants for cultivation;

(5) Abolish all unequal treaties signed by the tsarist government and the provisional government with foreign countries; withdraw from the First World War.

(6) Soviet Russia crushed foreign armed intervention and domestic counter-revolutionary rebellion, and consolidated the new political power.

Discuss: What were the reasons for the success of the October Revolution?

Before World War I, Russia was economically backward; during World War I, Russia suffered successive defeats, various domestic social conflicts intensified, and voices opposing the war and demanding change became increasingly louder. After the February Revolution, the bourgeois provisional government continued to participate in the First World War externally, suppressed the people's uprising internally, tried its best to extinguish the flames of revolution, and did not consider the feelings of the people. It continued to participate in the war and suffered a disastrous defeat.
