Roman City-State and Roman Empire PPT, Part 2: Roman City-State

1. Geographical location

The Italian Peninsula is located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, facing the sea on three sides, with a long coastline and the Apennine Mountains running through the peninsula. There is a lot of land on the island, which is conducive to the development of animal husbandry. The western region is crisscrossed by rivers and the land is fertile, suitable for growing crops.

2. The emergence of city-states

Since 1000 BC, many ethnic groups have migrated here, lived together, and formed many city-states. It was at this time that the Roman city-state gradually emerged from the banks of the Tiber River in the central part of the Italian peninsula.

3. Roman Republic

Time: Established in 509 BC;

National decision-making power: Senate composed of 300 nobles;

State executive power: two consuls with equal powers preside over daily affairs;

The highest authority: The Citizens’ Assembly is the formal highest authority;

Tribune: The power to veto resolutions proposed by the consul and the senate that are unfavorable to the common people.

4. Distribution of political rights

There is a strict restrictive relationship between the three powers of the Senate, the Consul and the Citizens' Assembly, which restrain each other and maintain a balance. This political system is considered by later generations to be one of the classic political systems in ancient times and had a huge impact on later generations.

5. "The Law of the Twelve Bronze Tables"

Time: Around 450 BC;

Content: Involving litigation procedures, ownership and debt rights, religious law, criminal law, civil law, etc.;

Function: It provides a written basis for sentencing and conviction, and curbs the nobles' misinterpretation and abuse of the law to a certain extent.

In 49 BC, Caesar led an army to attack the city of Rome, defeated his opponents, and took control of the Senate. Later, the Senate appointed him dictator for life.

In 29 BC, Octavian became the final victor. He pioneered the political form of "head of state" and controlled the highest real power of governance. In 27 BC, the Roman Republic evolved into the Roman Empire.

In the 2nd century, the Roman Empire entered the "Golden Age" and became a large empire spanning Europe, Asia and Africa, with the Mediterranean Sea becoming its "inner lake".
