1.Greek Architecture

The architectural art of Greece and Rome had a profound influence on the architectural styles of later generations. Greek architectural art is mainly reflected in temples. The temple is surrounded by columns, with some thick and thin columns. The Parthenon in Athens is a typical example.

2. Roman Architecture

Roman architecture absorbed the characteristics of Greek architecture and made some innovations, such as stone arches, domes, etc., which were both solid and gorgeous. The representative buildings of Rome include the Coliseum, which can accommodate nearly 80,000 spectators, the aqueduct project, the triumphal arch, obelisk and the Pantheon, a grand religious site that celebrates victory.

The Coliseum, also known as the Roman Colosseum and the Colosseum, was built specifically for barbaric slave owners to watch gladiatorial fights. Built in the 1st century AD, it is a model of the combination of Greek column architecture and Roman arch construction technology, reaching a very high level in engineering technology. The entire building is oval in shape with a solid base. In addition to performing gladiatorial battles and animal battles, it can also be filled with water to perform naval battle scenes.

Greek and Roman classical culture PPT, part 4: philosophy and law

1.Philosophy

Ancient Greek philosophy made outstanding achievements. Democritus proposed the "atom theory" and believed that everything in the universe is composed of tiny "atoms". Socrates' thinking turned to life and society, and the philosopher spent his life exploring issues such as the human soul, virtue, and happiness. He proposed that the best way to obtain knowledge is systematic questioning and answering; he also advocated that "people should know themselves", which is of great significance for understanding people's inner world.

Aristotle was an encyclopedic scholar. He made contributions to many disciplines. Aristotle was a student of Plato. He has a famous saying: "I love my teacher more than I love the truth." Aristotle dissected many animals and laid the foundation of zoology. He was the founder of logic, and his deduction and other methods became the methodological basis for scientific research.

Socrates, his student Plato, and Plato's student Aristotle are known as the "Three Sages of Ancient Greece" and are widely considered by later generations to be the founders of Western philosophy.

2.Law

Jurisprudence was one of the greatest achievements of the Romans. The Law of the Twelve Tables was the first step in the construction of the Roman legal system and the source of later Roman codes and even European jurisprudence.

Legal scholars in the Roman Empire argued extensively about law, including the law of nations that applied to relations between Roman citizens and non-citizens, economic law regarding the production and exchange of goods, and numerous legal concepts. Together they constitute a complete system of Roman jurisprudence.

Roman law is the basis of the legal systems of modern Western countries

Greek and Roman classical culture PPT, part 5: The origin of the Gregorian calendar

The calendar we use today originated from ancient Rome. The Roman calendar was derived from the solar calendar of the ancient Egyptians. Caesar ordered people to compile new legislation based on the solar calendar, called the "Julian Calendar." In order to correct the error of nearly 6 hours per year, an adjustment is made by adding one day every four years. That is, every year divisible by 4 is a leap year, and one day is added in February. In the 4th century, the Roman emperor used this as the Christian calendar.

Greek and Roman classical culture PPT, part 6: common sense

The number of days in each month of the Gregorian calendar is not exactly the same, which is actually a human result. The 365 days in a year were originally distributed like this: a single month has 31 days, an even month has 30 days, and only February has 29 days. The birthday of Caesar's heir Octavian was in August. He took one day from February and added it to August. As a result, February was reduced to 28 days, and August became a big month with 31 days. Eventually, the calendar system of "a single month before the seventh day and a double month after the seventh day" was formed.

When the Gregorian calendar was used until the 16th century, errors occurred again. So Pope Gregory XIII at that time reformed the leap system, that is, there is still a leap every four years, but there will be no leap in a year that is evenly divisible by 100, and there will be a leap in a year that is evenly divided by 400. In this way, there are 97 leaps every 400 years, and the error is extremely small. Therefore, the common Gregorian calendar is also called the "Gregorian calendar".
