On the night of April 23, 1949, the leading troops of the 35th Army of the People's Liberation Army liberated Nanjing. On the morning of April 24, the main force of the 35th Army crossed the river from Pukou and marched into Nanjing amidst the cheers of the crowds along the road (see picture on the right). The pier was crowded with welcoming crowds inside and outside. People cheered: "Welcome to the People's Liberation Army!" "Comrades of the People's Liberation Army, great work!" "Long live the Communist Party of China!" "Long live Chairman Mao!" The solemn and neat People's Liberation Army troops walked along the Walking on the Zhongshan road in broad strides.
