The Second Opium War

1. Sign of the outbreak: British troops bombarded Guangzhou in October 1856.

2. The first stage: from October 1856 to June 1858, Guangzhou was captured, approaching Tianjin, and threatening Beijing. In 1858, they were forced to sign the Treaty of Tianjin.

3. The second stage: In 1860, the British and French forces once again occupied Tianjin, attacked Beijing, burned the Old Summer Palace, and signed the "Beijing Treaty".

Hong Xiuquan, formerly known as Renkun, was a native of Huaxian County, Guangdong. Born in a farm family, he was once employed as a private school teacher. He failed to pass the imperial examination three times and was desperate for success in the imperial examination. Later, inspired by "Good Words to Encourage the World" written by Christian Liang Fa, he founded the God Worship Association in 1843 and organized the masses to stage an uprising. As the theoretical basis of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, Hong Xiuquan wrote "The Original Way to Awaken the World", "The Original Way to Awaken the World" and "The Original Way to Save the World" between 1845 and 1846, promoting the simple concept of equality and the revolution to eliminate the "Yam Luo Demon" Thought.

On January 11, 1851, the peasant revolutionary movement led by Hong Xiuquan broke out in Jintian Village, Guiping County, Guangxi, and was named the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. In the spring of 1852, the Taiping Army left Guangxi, passed through Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, and Anhui, and captured Nanjing in March 1853. It was renamed Tianjing and made the capital. After the Second Opium War, under the attack of the Qing government and foreign invaders, Tianjing fell on July 19, 1864. The Taiping Rebellion lasted for 14 years and spread across 18 provinces. It had a profound impact on modern Chinese history.
