Song Jiaoren’s Assassination—The Fuse

Song Jiaoren reorganized the Kuomintang and had a clear advantage in the congressional elections, causing Yuan Shikai to panic. In the spring of 1913, Song Jiaoren, who was preparing to go north to form a cabinet, was assassinated at the Shanghai Railway Station.

Yuan Shikai wanted to bribe Song Jiaoren with a lot of money, but Song Jiaoren was unmoved. Yuan Shikai secretly ordered Prime Minister Zhao Bingjun to plan the assassination of Song Jiaoren. On the evening of March 20, 1913, Song Jiaoren was shot by gangsters at the Shanghai Railway Station. He was shot three times and died after being sent to the hospital. He was only 31 years old. This was the "Song Case" that shocked the whole country in the early years of the Republic of China.

2. The launch of the second revolution

(1) Background: After the "Song Case" occurred, Yuan Shikai was condemned by domestic public opinion. Yuan Shikai ordered the use of force to suppress the Kuomintang, dismissed the governors of Jiangxi, Guangdong, and Anhui provinces, and sent troops south.

(2) Time: 1913

(3) Process: Sun Yat-sen called for an army to attack Yuan and launched the "second revolution" against Yuan.

(4) Result: Due to the dispersion of the Kuomintang's strength, the second revolution was quickly suppressed by Yuan Shikai.
